LESSON PROPER
Art is dynamic. It is ever changing as you
learned in the previous quarter, art is
constantly shifting in movements and styles.
These changes are caused by many factors
like social conditions and of course,
advancements in technology. In the present,
no technology has been as significant as the
computer and it is no surprise that artists have
adapted it to create art
Artists are always trying to find new
ways to create and express themselves. One
way of doing this is through the use of
technology. Artists experiment with new
technology to find new ways to make art and,
at the same time, differentiate themselves
from other artists. One of the most commonly
used technology-based mediums in art is
digital technology.
“So what is Digital technology?
Anyone?”
(student raised their hands)
“Yes, Melad?”
“refers to electronic devices that use binary
code combinations to store and process data
ma’am”
“Very good”
Artworks that employ digital
technology are called digital art.
Common examples of digital art are
seen in computer art and multimedia art.
Digital artworks merge the past and the
present to create something new.
“So these are the examples of digital
art.”
Art using digital technology has been
accepted as valid artistic practices with
galleries all over the world exhibiting digital
art. More and more contemporary artists use it
in their works. Many artists adopt digital
technology in their paintings, drawings and
sculptures. Digital technology is also widely
used in many contemporary art forms such as
collages, fine art photography, installations,
and performance art.
“So these are the examples of digital
installation.”
Computer
If the painter has paints and brushes to
express art, digital artists employ a number of
tools to create their artworks. The following
are some of the tools used by digital artists.
The most commonly used tool in
digital art is the computer. No one could have
imagined how much the computer would
change our lives. It has evolved from the
glorified calculator to the most utilized tool of
the modern age. The computers of today have
evolved so much that its processing powers
have been used in various fields and
disciplines including the arts.
As computers became more accessible,
artists started using this technology to create
their art. Kindly read students.
“As early as the 1950s, artists used computers
to create images and the first computer art
exhibition was held in New York titled
“Computer-Generated Pictures.”
“Thank you, students, so here’s an
example of Computer-Generated Pictures”
“Next, kindly read students”
“In 1969, another exhibition of computer art
was held in London. The artworks exhibited
there were simple geometric shapes in
various arrangements. It may be simple now,
but this was considered revolutionary at that
time.”
“Very good, the simple geometric
shapes in various arrangements are called
cybernetic, here’s an example”
Any creative outputs that use
computers are called computer art or digital
art. Digital artists are artists who use the
computer to express their art. Digital artists
use two types of tools-hardware and software
“Anyone who wants to read Hardware?”
(student raised their hands)
“Yes, Bunagan”
(student reads)
A. Hardware
Hardware are the physical tools used
in digital art that typically include the CPU,
monitor, keyboard, mouse and printer.
“Very good Ms Bunagan”
There are also other hardware or tools
that the artist can use to create a masterpiece
such as the graphic tablet and the stylus.
These tools are high-tech versions of the pen
and paper. Instead of drawing on paper, the
artist draws on the tablet using a pen-like-tool
called the stylus. The drawing graphic tablet
and stylus, tools used in digital art is
converted into a digital file, which is saved in
the computer's memory. The artist can later on
manipulate the digital file by adding colors,
text, distort, or other digital effects the artists
may want.
There are different methods of
presenting computer art. It can be presented in
soft copy, meaning it is presented directly
from the computer or projected on a screen or
it can be in hard copy, which means printed
out using printers.
The most commonly used type of
printers to reproduce artworks are inkjet
printers. They were first developed in 1976.
With the inkjet printers, artists are able to
produce high quality art reproductions of their
works called giclee prints. The term giclee
came from the French term meaning to spray.
This describes the ability of the inkjet to spray
4 million microscopic drops of ink on the
canvas per second. Inks used are high quality
and fade-resistant.
Although most of the printers in the
market print out flat images, current
technology is greatly developing. There are
printers that use robots to reproduce impasto
techniques that can recreate the texture of
brushstrokes. Also, printers that produce
three-dimensional are now commercially
available albeit expensive.
“So, this is an art that you can seen the
brushstrokes”
“Miss Ancheta, kindly read letter B.”
(student reads)
B. Software
Software are computer programs that help
an artist create art. These are applications that
exist as data in the computer. Unlike the
computer hardware, the software can be
copied, updated, corrupted and deleted.
“Thank you, Ancheta. Anyone who can give
an example of software?”
“Facebook app”
“Instagram app”
“Twitter app”
“MS Word app”
“Google chrome app”
“Spotify”
“YouTube”
“Very good Grade 10, there are so many
examples of software”
“There are many different types of
software available to the artist that can be used
in creating digital art. It all depends on the
artist’s needs. It can be a very basic computer
graphics app like MS Paint, do you know
what MS paint is?”
“Yes Ma’am”
“Very good so this is the app MS Paint
that can be seen in your PC.”
It is available with the operating system of
a computer. There are some software that are
more specialized and have to be purchased
separately. These software programs often
need training to be effectively utilized.
One of the most popular computer
software used for art applications is
CorelDRAW. Anyone who wants to read
CorelDRAW?
(students raised their hands)
“Yes Corpuz”
(student reads)
CorelDRAW- which specializes in digital
illustration painting among others.
“Anyone who wants to read Autocad?
(students raised their hands)
“Yes Magora”

AutoCAD by Autodesk - Engineers and
architects use computer-aided design
software to help in creating plans, designs,
and 3D models.
“Very good, how about Adobe Photoshop?”
(students raised their hands)
“Yes Singun”
(student reads)
Adobe Photoshop is used for image
manipulation. World-famous German
photographer Andreas Gursky has been
candid in using such, image manipulating
software to modify and improve his
photographs. He believes that with the
computer, he is able capture the details and
“Very good Singun” not be limited by the camera.
There are a lot of other examples of
computer software that may be used
depending on your need and budget. Some
computer software are free to download and
are easy to use with minimal training needed.
You just need to research which program or
application is right for you.
With training and initiative, some
artists even create their own computer
software, such as Harold Cohen (b.1928). This
British artist created a computer program
called AARON that creates random abstract
drawings. It garnered a lot of interest since it
was one of the first art forms to combine
artificial intelligence and art.
“Okay, Let’s proceed to Cellular
Phones, Domingo kindly read Cellular
Phones”
(student reads)
C. Cellular Phones
The cellular phone has become a part
of daily lifestyle that many could not imagine
life without it. The first mobile phone was
built by Motorola in the early 1970s. It was a
bulky contraption almost the size of a shoe
box and was primarily used for calling in the
1990s. The digital phone evolved, which
allowed for clearer, foster, and more secured
signal and services. A decade later. 3G
services again upgraded the speed and the
amount of data that can be sent through the
cellular signal that allowed for email and
internet services
As more and more people started using
cellular phones, mobile phone manufacturers
tried to outdo each other by adding more and
more capabilities onto the mobile phones like
cameras, colored screens, music, radio, etc.
Soon the mobile phones became pocket-sized
computers with internet capabilities, GPS,
media players, and were coined as
smartphones.
Since the cell phones of today are like
computers, many digital art are also made
with them. Perhaps one of the most utilized
features of modern cell phones is the camera.
“Anyone who wants to read digital
photography?”
(students raised their hands)
“Yes Mallillin”
(student reads)
Digital Photography
Digital photography is a type of
digital art. Digital photography uses digital
cameras. Digital cameras evolved from
cameras. Cameras capture images through the
use of light that is imprinted on a film. This
technology was revolutionary at the time and
was one of the reasons many painters started
veering away from painting realistic images.
Although there were earlier technology that
was able to transfer images like the camera
obscura, which was used by the Renaissance
painters, the earliest example of the modern
camera was built in the 1820s. It is where
images were captured through long exposure
and the use of chemical reaction on
photographic plates.
“Okay very good Mallillin”
Starting in the 1840s, photographs
were used by artists to take pictures of
landscapes and portraits as a basis for their
paintings. These photographs lessened the
sitting time for the models, while landscape
photographs helped the Impressionist painters
in their outdoor landscape paintings
In 1884, the founder of Kodak
developed cameras that transferred images
into film that were called negatives in the
early twentieth century colored photographs
were developed, which flourished throughout
the twentieth century until the invention of
digital cameras. The digital camera was able
to resolve many of the limitations of film
photography.
In the late nineteenth century,
photographic artists such as Alfred Stieglitz
(1864-1946) and Edward Steichen (1879-
1973) were instrumental in making
photography accepted as a valid art form
equal with that of the other traditional art
forms like painting, drawing, sculpting, etc.
Their works were exhibited in museums.
Although popular, the camera has its
disadvantages. Images were captured on a
negative that came in a roll. Each roll had a
maximum of around 36 shots. These negatives
were then taken to a shop to be developed,
which took at least an hour. It was only after
that the image taken can be seen.
“Anyone who wants to read digital
cameras?”
(students raised their hands)
“Yes Peralta”
(student reads)
Digital Cameras
Digital cameras capture and save
images as soft copies that can be downloaded
to a computer or be printed. Since the images
are saved as computer files, they are easier to
be viewed, shared, manipulated, printed, and
deleted. Digital cameras can store up to
thousands of images depending on the storage
capacity, which is a far cry from the 36
pictures per roll of the film camera. Most
digital cameras can also record videos and
sound. In today's technology, digital cameras
are incorporated in other devices such as cell
phones, computers, pens, watches, etc.
Digital photography is usually made
using one of the two types of digital cameras.
One type is the point-and-shoot camera, which
is straightforward. You point the camera to
where you want to take a photo of and click.
Due to its simplicity, it is the camera used by
most people. It is lightweight and easy to
carry. Most point-and-shoot cameras are small
enough to be kept inside the pocket. In recent
years, there is a decline in the demand of
point-and-shoot cameras due to the
development of cellular phones. The digital
cameras found on cell phones have advanced
greatly and has become as good and
sometimes even better alternatives to point-
and-shoot cameras.
“Understood class?”
“Yes ma’am”
“Okay very good, so let’s now proceed to
Internet meme. Since digital art is interactive,
it evolves and branches out into differ aspects
and forms depending on how the audience or
viewers respond to it. A good example of this
concept is the internet meme. Anyone who
wants to read?”
“Yes Perez” (students raised their hands)
(student reads)
Internet Meme
An internet meme is defined as a
movement, catchphrase, idea, or medium that
is spread from one person through the
internet.
“Thank you Perez”
In the internet age, cultural boundaries
are not as limiting and memes are often
images wherein internet users using the same
pictures give different and often
humorous(funny) captions. Like many other
examples of digital art, a meme starts with a
picture, and depending on its audience,
branches out to other different memes.
Internet memes have been used in marketing
products and oftentimes as a social
commentary.
A common internet meme called
Image Macro, kindly read image macro

(student reads)
image macro follows the typical template of
a top text and an image then a bottom text.
The text font typically used is Impact and is
centered with a black border. The image is
often famous or has gone viral on the

ANALYSIS
“What is digital art?”
“Digital art are artworks that employ the
electronic devices using the binary code to
“Correct!” create the artworks ma’am.”
“What tools can you use to create digital art?”
“the tools that we can use to create digital art
ma’am is the hardware and software.”
“That’s right!”
“What is the difference between software and
hardware? GIVE examples of each one”
“Hardware are the physical tools used in
digital art, for example ma’am is CPU.
Software are the nonphysical aspects of the
computer. For example, ma’am is Facebook
app”
“Correct! What about Internet meme?”
“An internet meme is defined as a movement
catchphrase idea or medium that is spread
from one person through the internet ma’am.”
“Wow very good students”
ABSTRACTION
“Which digital art tools do you commonly
use? How do you use them?”
“Hardware ma’am, I use cellular phone for
capturing images”
“Very good class”
APPLICATION
“Present your meme and read only the saying
or quote you wrote into it.”
GENERALIZATION
“What is the importance of using digital
technology nowadays in creating arts?”
(students raised their hands)
“Yes Mr. Peralta?”
“Basically, technology helps broaden the
horizons of an artist's creativity while also
limit the problems that they might encounter.
It makes the production of art a lot less
demanding, and as a result, artists now have
more time to contemplate and expand their
creativity.”
“That’s correct.”
IV. EVALUATION
I will show you some pictures and tell me if it’s Internet Meme or what types of digital
art tools.
V. ASSIGNMENT
