About Linux
Linux is one of the most popular operating systems for programmers to
use for development. GNU/Linux is a kernel family of open-source Unix-
like operating systems. It was based on the Linux kernel, an operating
system kernel first released on September 17, 1991, by Linus Torvalds.
GNU/Linux is a monolithic kernel, which means that the kernel handles
almost all of the work of the Operating System.

The most well-known and widely used open source operating system is
Linux. As an operating system, Linux is software that sits beneath all other
software on a computer, receiving requests from those programs and
relaying them to the computer's hardware. The real reason for Unix’s
popularity? Many hackers feel that Unix is the Right Thing—the One
True Operating System. Hence, the development of Linux by an
expanding group of Unix hackers who want to get their hands dirty with
their own system.
History
Linus Benedict Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969, in Helsinki,
Finland. He went to the University of Helsinki in Finland to study
computer science. This is where he began working on a 'fun' project. This
project evolved into what we now know as Linux. Linux was used as part
of his Master's thesis, 'Linux: A Portable Operating System.'

He began working on Linux when he was only 21 years old. He is now a

software engineer. He created Linux, an open source operating system
that is part of the UNIX family. Linus was interested in programming
when he was 10 years old. In an interview with Chris Anderson at TED,
he describes himself as a prototypical nerd.

He excelled in math, physics, and, of course, programming. Torvalds only

worked on the Linux kernel. The Linux operating system is the result of a
global collaboration involving the GNU Project, the Linux kernel
development team (led by Torvalds), and others.

As a result, the proper way to refer to any Linux operating system that
uses GNU is GNU/Linux.

Top 10 Linux distribution from 2020 - present

The firm believes that increasing product applications in different

sectors industrial is a key factor in the growth of the market.
Therefore, the increasing adoption of cloud platforms on Linux-based
operating systems will allow applications in various industries.

In fact, as the Covid-19 pandemic continues, it has posed an exceptional

challenge for back-end technologies and front-end applications.

However, Linux is playing a dynamic role in efforts to mitigate the spread of

Covid-19.

Many open source projects support healthcare services, software developers,

scientists, and innovators in many countries to alleviate some of the difficulties
associated with this pandemic. Embedded Linux has been used in thermal imaging
devices such as the Raspberry Pi-based FluSense and Kogniz's Health Cam device.
This made it possible to control the temperature, detect a cough and analyze the
data to monitor the symptoms of the coronavirus.

Finally, the firm believes that with increased investment in terms of business
strategies such as product launches, business expansion, mergers,
acquisitions etc., market growth is expected to grow at a substantial CAGR
over the forecast period.
The study report covers several factors that have contributed to the growth of
the Linux market in recent years. Among all factors, the increasing number of
company mergers and acquisitions has had the greatest impact on market
growth.

Function
Linux is primarily used as an operating system of Servers because of its
low price, flexibility and UNIX background. Linux can be used as the
foundation for almost any IT strategy, including containers, cloud-native
applications, and security. It is at the heart of some of the most important
fields and businesses, ranging from knowledge-sharing websites like
Wikipedia and the New York Stock Exchange to Android-powered
mobile devices.
In fact, Linux has infiltrated every aspect of your life, from your mobile
phone to your car to your refrigerator to your Roku device. Before Linux
became the world's platform for running desktop, servers, and embedded
systems, it had become (and continues to be) one of the most reliable and
secure operating systems.

The Android Kernel, which is in

charge of mediating between the
hardware and the system, includes a
number of critical components such
as screen controllers, audio
controllers, integrated cameras, and
energy management.
Features

Linux has a number of different versions to suit any type of user.

These versions are called distributions or “distros” and this is all
free.
o Multiuser capability: Multiple users can access the same system resources like
memory, hard disk, etc. But they have to use different terminals to operate.
o Multitasking: More than one function can be performed simultaneously by
dividing the CPU time intelligently.
o Portability: Portability doesn't mean it is smaller in file size or can be carried in
pen drives or memory cards. It means that it support different types of hardware.
o Security: It provides security in three ways namely authenticating (by assigning
password and login ID), authorization (by assigning permission to read, write and
execute) and encryption (converts file into an unreadable format).
o Live CD/USB: Almost all Linux distros provide live CD/USB so that users can run/try
it without installing it.
o Graphical User Interface (X Window system): Linux is command line based OS
but it can be converted to GUI based by installing packages.
o Support's customized keyboard: As it is used worldwide, hence supports
different languages keyboards.
o Application support: It has its own software repository from where users can
download and install many applications.
o File System: Provides hierarchical file system in which files and directories are
arranged.
o Open Source: Linux code is freely available to all and is a community based
development project.
Popular linux distributions:
 Linux Mint
 Kali Linux
 Ubuntu
 Debian
 Manjaro
 Antergos
 Solus
 Fedora
 Elementary OS
 OPENSUSE
 MX Linux
Advantage and Disadvantages
Advantages:
 Stability and efficiency: Because Linux was developed from Unix, Linux
and Unix have many similarities. Not only the user interface and operation
methods, but Linux also inherits the superior stability and efficiency of Unix.
For servers using Linux as the operating system, it is quite common to run for
one year without downtime.
 Low configuration requirements: Linux has very low hardware
requirements. It can run smoothly on computers and Linux laptops a few years
ago. With Windows, you need to constantly upgrade the machine’s hardware.
 Free or a small fee: Linux is based on the GPL (General Public License), so
anyone can use or modify the original code for free. Only a small fee is
required when choosing a Linux distribution made by some vendors. Of
course, it is still much less expensive than Windows.
 Strong support: a large number of Linux enthusiasts will exchange
discussions, and develop and share some good software, with a very open use
atmosphere.
 Security: Linux has considerable user and community support, so it can
quickly find system vulnerabilities and quickly release security patches.
Linux has many other advantages, such as strong network support, convenient
console operation, and so on. You may even download Photoshop for Linux
and use its photo editing and designing features on this free platform.
Although Linux does a good job overall, it still has some shortcomings.
 High customization: Linux is open source, everyone can download its source
code for customization. Even the existing distribution desktop environment
can be changed. If you have the ability, you can change the Linux system.
Disadvantages:
 Linux has many available software programs, utilities, and games but
Windows has larger software programs
 Linux does not dominate the market like Windows, It is difficult to find the
applications to support your needs but more programmers are developing the
applications that are supported by Linux
 Many games do not run on this operating system.
 There’s no standard edition of Linux. Whereas Microsoft offers several
different editions of each version of Windows, there are countless variations
of Linux. For a new user it can be confusing to work out which is best for you.
 Linux is, for new users at least, not as easy to use as Windows. That’s largely
because Linux gives you more control, but does mean you’ll have to spend
some time getting used to the way it works.
 While Linux can be suitable for an individual user, its small market share
means it’s much harder to introduce in a corporate setting. With most office
workers already familiar with Windows and Microsoft programs, there’ll
likely be a notable time cost in converting staff to using a Linux system.
 Since Linux is neither as popular as Windows, nor a commercial product,
support works in a different way. You may have to look harder to find the
answer to a problem and, while Linux supporters are more likely to offer help,
it may not always match your own level of technical understanding.
