Introduction
EN 12816, Industial valves — She! dosign strength, Is in tour parts. EN 12816-1 and EN 12516-2 spacity
mathoda far datermining the thickneas of steal valve shalls by tabulation or ealculabon metheds raspactivaty.
EN 12516-3 astablishes an experimental mathod for asaessing tha strengih of valve ahelis in steel, cast iron
and copper alloy 95 a type test by applying an slovaied hydrostatic pressure al ambient temperature.
EN 12516-4 specifies method for calculating the thickness for valve shelis in metalic material athe’ than steel.
The tabulation method, EN 125 16-1, |s similar in approach ta ASME 816.34 in thal the designer can look up
the required minimum wall thickness dimension ol the valve body trom a table. The internal diameter of the
inlet bore of the valve, gives the reference dimension {rom which the tabulated wall thicknass of the body are
calculated. 1 applies only to valve bodies, bonnets and covers with essentially circular cross-section. For valve
chelia with oval ar feciangular shapes and for additional inads, EN 12516-2 should be used (eae 8.6}
The calculation method. EN 12516-2 ie. similar in approach to the farmer DIN 38.40 where the designar is
fequired to calculate the wall thickness for each point on the pressure temperature curve using the allowable
stress at thal temperature for the material he has chosen. The allowable stiess is calculated from the mater
properties using the salety factors that are defined in EM 12516-2. The formulae in EN | 2516-2 consider he
valve as a pressure vessel and ensure thal there will be no excessive deformation or plastic instability.
EN 12516-1 epecties Standard and Special pressuretemperature ratings tor valve shails with bodies having
the tabulated ‘thickness.
The tabulation method gives ane thickness for the body foreach PM {see 3.1) ar Class designation depending
only on the inside diameter, 0,.. tite body at the point where the thickness Is ta be determined.
The thicknesses are calculated using the thin cylinder formula that is also usedt in EN 12816-2. The allowable
stress used in the formula ls equal to 120,7 MPa and the calculation pressure Po varies according PN and
Class designation,
For the Clase designations, the rules tor determining the pressure/temperature ratings are the same tar both
valve shale and tangas.
For PN dasignations rules tor determining the pressure Remparature ratings are ditfarent for Tanges and tor
valves, but this revision af the standard has adjusted the rules to get at roam temperature the same pressure.
The change of pressure in temperature needs 19 be taken into account by the piping/assembler.
The main reasons for the differences are due to the treatment a! ceiling values. In PN tlanges, a constant
calling s1tesa of 140 MPa at room tempersture is applied. In PN and Cisss dasignations, the EN 125 16-1
calling criteria apply, which are temperature dependent.
The reason tar the down rating of Standard rating walves relative to Special rating is that the Staadarc rating
body is not subject to the gpecified nan-destiuctive examination procedures ana acceplanee lavals,
The thicknesses for all designations are sporoximately proportional to the Class 4 500 thickness in the ratio of
the pressures
This standard tabulates the cammonly used ratings. itis possible fo design shells to sult particular applications
or markets using intermediate ratings. This data can be obtained using linear istarpolation of the tabulated
data in EN 12516-1.
A menit of the tabulation method, which hag @ twed set of ahell dimensions respective ot the maternal of ine
shell, is that it i possible to nave common patterns and forging dies. The allowable prassure/iemperature
rating tor each materiel group: varies proportional to the selected stresses ai the material group to which ine
material belong,
InfoStandard Web 3.0.6-2694EN 12010-1:2014 (E)
A meni of the calculation method is that it allows the most efficient design for 8 specific application using the
allowable stresses for the mictual materiat selected for the application.
The twa methods are based on different assumplions, and as a consequence the detail analysts is different,
Both methods offers safe and praven method of designing pressure-bearing camponenis ot valve shells,

1 Scope
This European Standard spectties the tabulation methad for determining the wall thickness of valve bodies,
boninels and covers with essentially circular cross-section made in forged, cast ar fabrieated steal,
For valve shells with oval, ractangular or non-circular shapes, see 8.6,
The range of PN or Glass designations tar which thicknesses are tabulated is:
PN 2,5, PN 8, PN 10, PN 18, PN 25, PM 40, PN 63, PN 100, PN 160, PN 250, PN S20, PN 400, Class 150,
Class 300 ,Class 600, Class 900, Class 1 500, Class 2 500, Class 4 500.
Pressuretemperature ratings are specitied for each material graup for the above PN Standard Class and
Special Class designations.
The non-destructive examination procedures and acceptance levels that need to be applied to the valve shell
components in order for the vaive to be used at Spacial Class pressureitemperature ratings are detined
Detalis are also given for the allernative rules for small bore valves of DN 65 and smaller designated as
Limited Glass.
This standard dows not apaly to threaded: end valves:
— ON 80 or larger;
— oF which have pressure ratings greater than Glass 2 500;
— ar which aperate at lemparalures greater than 40 °C.
Soaket Welding and valves DN 89 OF larger are outside the aoupe of this standard,

The temperature limitations for EN materials shall be as given in the material standard
The choice of materia! groupings is explained in Annex 8.
6 Pressure/temperature (p/t) ratings
6.1 General
The pressure/temperature ratings are established accarding Annex A.
The rating Tables? to 31 apecity the allowable pressures at different temperatures for bodies, Bonnets and
cavers with PN snd Class designations made from the appropriate matenal group (see Annex), The
jemperature ot the valve is generally the temperature at the eentained fluid.
6.2 Standard rating
In conformance wit the present standard, standard rating applies to flanged (see 6.6) and butt welding end
valves in all sizes and to vaives with threaded and socket welding ends up to ON 65 (NPS 2 1/2)
When @ valve bady or bonnet is manulactured by welding parts lagether, i shall be elassttied aa sullable for
Standard rating provided that 10% af the welds are Subject to random non-destructive testing in such a
manniar that it results in g [cint efticiency of 0,88.
6.3 Special Class
The bodias, bonnets and cavers that have baen subjected to the levels of NDE specified in Annex J can be
used at a higher pressureitemperature rating than Standard Glass
When a valve body or bonnet is manufactured by welding parts together, It shall only be classitied as sutable
for Special rating it it meats the requirements of Annex C.
6.4 Limited Class
Wolding and threaded end valves in sizes DIN 65 (NPS 2 1/2) and emailer designated 2s Limited Class, shall
‘ollow the requirements of Annex H. Alatings shall mot exceed the values calculated in accordance with
Annex H
6.5 Intermediate ratings
Any pressureitemparature ratings in either Standard Class or Smeciah Class ratings, between those listed In
ihe tables may be assigned to welding oF threaded end valves providing all the requirement of this standard
are met
injetmediate ratings are determined by linear interpolation af tabulated vaiues.
6.6 Flanged ratings
The decrease of pressure wersus temperature for valves with PN flanges designed according ta this standard
differs trom EN 1092-1. The user shall take this into account when selecting the flange rating

6.1 Minimum wall thickness
The wall thickness of valve bodies, al the tine of manufacture and excluding all linings or liners, shall be nat

The thickness tabulated in Table 7 includes 2 10 mm standardized allowance tor ezo sion and linear conosion.

For socket wetiding and threaded end valves, the socket or thread diameters and associated coumerbores or
tapped bores need nat be taken into account in esiablishing ihe value of 2,
For the case of valves used between high and iow pressure sections of @ system then the inside diameter of
