The Associate of Arts degree in American Sign Language Interpreting prepares individuals to work in a variety of entry-level settings
with a diverse population. Competency in English and American Sign Language (ASL) are necessary. Students will have both in-
class and out-of-class experiences with members of the Deaf and interpreting communities.
Program Outcomes: (1) describe, explain, and discuss Deaf Culture, including the values and influence of diverse cultural, historical,
and global perspectives of, and in, the Deaf community; (2) evaluate culturally based linguistic and nonlinguistic information to create
dynamic equivalent translations in American Sign Language and written and spoken English discourse;
(3) apply entry-level competencies as defined by best practices in the field of sign language interpreting by producing accurate,
meaningful, and effective interpretations; (4) apply the principles of the interpreting profession’s code of professional conduct in
ethical decision-making.
A 2+2 Articulation Agreement allows students with an A.A. degree in ASL Interpreting to be admitted as juniors in Interdisciplinary
Studies at the University of New Orleans. Students seeking to transfer, to this or other institutions, should seek advising from the
transfer institution as early as possible.
Graduates are prepared to begin the national certification process. Those interested should contact the national certifying
organization for more information and requirements.
