Aim Work in Pairs
The aim is introduce students to the simple past using “be.” Have your students work in pairs to complete the information gap.
They’ll have to ask each other about where Ben and Danielle were
at different times throughout the day.
New Vocabulary
at the park, at the mall, at school, at a movie, at a restaurant, Now Work Alone
on a train, at the dentist’s, at the doctor’s, in the garden,
in the shower, in the bath, in bed When they are finished the pair work, have your students try the
follow-up activity to review their writing skills for this structure.
(Make sure they are not doing the follow-up activity and pair work
Target Structure activity at the same time. These are meant to be done separately.)
Examples:
Where were you at 10:00 last night? I was at a movie. Listening
Where was he at 4:00 pm? He was at the park.
For this task you’ll need to tell the students about where
you were at different times yesterday. Use the places from
Teaching the Class (before the handouts) today’s lesson, or use other places that your students know.
To make the task more student-centered, have your students
Use the flashcards to elicit and check your students’ call out the questions. E.g., “Where were you at 4:00 pm?”

Class Survey
After you’ve gone over the vocabulary and target structures, hand
out the worksheets. Write all the new phrases on the board and Students should walk around the class and ask as many classmates
have your students copy them down on page 1. (They should write as possible where they were at 4:00 pm, 7:00 pm, and 10:00 pm
the new phrases below each image.) Then elicit the target structure yesterday. As a follow-up, you could have students write out
and write the questions and answers on the board. Have students full sentences or report some of their findings to the class.
