This guideline enables dealers and their customers to benefit from cost reductions made possible through an
established parts reusability and salvage program. Every effort has been made to provide the most current and
relevant information known to Caterpillar Inc. Since the Company makes ongoing changes and improvements to
its products, this guideline must be used with the latest technical information available from Caterpillar to ensure
such changes and improvements are incorporated where applicable.

Summary

This guideline has Use Again wear specifications for Caterpillar engine crankshafts. It must be used with the
instructions given in Guidelines for Reusable Parts and Savage operations SEBF8039, Inspection of Crankshafts
for Cracks , SEBF8042, Procedure to Grind and Polish Crankshafts , SEBF8043, Visual Inspection of
Crankshafts , and SEBF8054, Procedures to Measure and Straighten Bent Crankshafts .

If a crankshaft meets the specifications found in this guideline, it can be expected to give normal performance
until the next overhaul when used again in the same application.

Crankshafts that are acceptable according to Caterpillar specifications published in Guideline for Reusable Parts
and Salvage Operations, SEBF8041, Specifications for Crankshafts in Caterpillar Engines are not necessarily
acceptable to some insurance companies and marine societies.

Specifications for Determining if a Crankshaft Can Be Used Again As Is

The Use Again maximum TIR for most used crankshafts without straightening or grinding can be found in
Chart A. Do not use the crankshaft again as-is if the TIR is more than the specification found in Chart A,
Measurements of Reground Crankshafts Maximum TIR (Before the Procedure to Straighten) .
If a crankshaft is reground, the journals must be in alignment with other surfaces of the crankshaft. The TIR for
reground crankshafts is given in Chart A. If the TIR for any of the measurements that follow is more than
specifications shown in Chart A, the crankshaft cannot be used again as is . If possible, grind the crankshaft to
the next standard size and measure again.

Chart C, Crankshafts Measurement Specifications

Specification for Surface Finish

The maximum permissible surface roughness for crankshaft bearing journals is given in Chart C, Crankshaft
Measurement Specifications .

If the journals are rougher (have a higher number) than the specification, they must be polished. Refer to
SEBF8042 for information regarding grinding and polishing crankshafts.

The thrust face surface finish must be 0.45 micrometers (18 microinches) or smoother.

Make certain there are no wear steps or marks from grinding on the surface. Refer to SEBF8043 for information
regarding crankshaft inspection criteria.

Specification for Out-Of-Round and Diameter

This is the diameter of the bearing journal before beginning any procedure to regrind. The permissible diameter of
a rod journal or main journal must not be more than the dimensions shown in Chart C. Two rod journals (or one
main journal and one rod journal) can measure up to 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch) under the minimum diameter
specifications shown in the chart.

Specification for Taper

The permissible amount of taper that a rod journal or main journal can have must not be more than the dimensions
shown in Chart C.

Specification for Thrust Face Wear

The measurement between the thrust faces must be within the specifications found in Chart C.

Only D330C, 3304, D333C, and 3306 Engines have two thicknesses of thrust bearings available. The 7N-9343
Thrust Plate was released for the spacer plate block. This 6.73 mm (0.265 inch) thick thrust plate can be used
instead of the thinner plate on earlier models when the thrust faces must be ground to make the crankshaft usable.
In all other engines, thrust faces must be ground very lightly, approximately between 0.02 and 0.05 mm (0.001
and 0.002 inch), to clean up damaged surfaces. Refer to explanation of foot note number 3 in Chart C. Thrust
faces must have a surface finish of 0.45 micrometers (18 microinches) or less after they have been polished

Specification for Journal Fillet Radii

There are two procedures for checking the fillet radius. The preferred method is to use the correct size gauge.
However, if the correct gauge is not available, use the Bracket-Check method. Refer to SEBF8054 for more
information on the procedures and the tools required to check the fillet radius.

If the radius does not meet the specifications shown in Chart C, do not use the crankshaft again.

Note: The radius dimensions given in Chart C are before shot peening. If possible, measure the fillets before
shot peening. Refer to SEBF8054 for more information

Procedure to Check Journal Hardness

The readings must be within tolerances shown in Chart C .

Note: At times, a soft area will be found on a journal. If this occurs, check both sides of this soft area. If the
journal hardness is within the specifications on both sides of the soft area, the journal hardness is acceptable.

journal and the far rear fillet can be softer than the specifications shown in Chart C.

1. The maximum thrust face width can be up to 0.08 mm (0.003 inch) more than the dimension shown if after assembly, crankshaft endplay is still permissible according to the Service Manual specification.

Chart D, Grinding Specifications for Crankshafts

Some of the items in the chart that follows need explanation:

Width

This is the size of the wheel (sidewall-to-sidewall) necessary to grind in a single movement. Do not use any
wheel that is wider than this dimension without dressing it narrower.

Refer to Chart C, for the width measurements of main journals where the thrust bearing is located.

Main No.

This column shows the numbers of the main journals, which have a Width dimension that is different from the
Thrust Face journal where the thrust bearing is located. These dimensions will be narrower than the main
journal with the thrust bearings.

Bearing Undersize

These dimensions give the optional sizes of undersize bearings available for the crankshafts. At all times, check
the parts book and NPR to see if the part numbers are available before you begin to grind. Subtract the
Undersize dimension from the dimension in the Diameter column to get the journal size.

Note: Because 0R crankshafts have already been ground, it is not appropriate to include the specifications to
grind those crankshafts in this publication. For a complete list of available remanufactured crankshafts, refer to
the crankshaft section of SELD0077, Cat Remanufactured Products Guide .
