This topic tackles one of the most crucial aspects of human development. It highlights
biological and environmental factors that shape sexual development.

The study of human sexuality draws on many disciplines;

 Biologists are interested in the physiological mechanisms of the sexual arousal


and response.
 The medical science informs us about sexual transmitted infections like
HIV/AIDS and the organic bases of sexual disfunctions.
 Psychologist study the effect of perceptions ,learning ,thought ,motivation
,emotion and personality on sexual behavior and attitudes.
 Sociologist focus on the context of sexual behavior pertaining the relationships
between sexual behavior and religions , race and social class.
 Anthropologists concentrate on cross-cultural similarities and differences in
sexual behavior.
Many other scientist from many disciplines look into possible parallel between
the sexual behavior of humans and other animals.

THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Throughout the history , many differences has emerge in understanding human sexuality
like;

 Incestuous relationships in classical era.


 Having male and female extra-marital relationships in ancient Greece and Rome.
 Ancient Hebrew practicing Polygamy
 Prostitution is labelled “ Oldest Profession”.
 The Islamic tradition values only marital sexual contact .
 Taoism ( China ) – They considered sex as a form of worship that leads to harmony
with nature , as well as immortality

THE EARLY CHRISTIAN

The Early Christians believes on , that ;

 Sex was restricted to marriage and was for precreation and not for pleasure.
 Lust made sexual expression inherently evil
 Divorce was outlawed.

THE MIDDLE AGES

 In the middle ages they believes that women viewed as sinful ( like Eve ) and saintly
( like Mary ).

THT REFORMATIONE PROTESTAN

 They believe that the idea of marriage for priests , since sexual behavior is part of
our human nature . Sex for more than just procreation but also for intimacy of
couples.

COLONIAL ERA

 Europeans transported ideas to other cultures.

INDUSTRIAL ERA

 Sexuality suppressed and not talked about.

THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION DURING THE 1960s AND 70s VIEWS ON SEXUALITY
CHANGED
 Forces that brought about the revolution include the birth-control pill ,the mass
media , and the concept of playboy.
 Discussion and portrayals of sexuality accepted & common place.
- Gray activism
 AIDS education , prevention , and treatment
- Sex , researches , with explicit questionnaires
 Master & Johnson laboratory research

BIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

Males

 Outgrowth of facial and bodily hair

 Emerging Adam’s apple

 Deepening of the voice

 Muscle development

 Onset of menarche
 Noticeable changes in hips, breast, and skin.

EROGENOUS ZONES

 Are described as part of the body that are chiefly sensitive and cause increased
sexual arousal when touched in a sexual manner.

SEXUAL RESPONSE CYCLE

 The sexual response cycle as introduced by Masters and Virginia Johnson which
refers to the sequence of physical and emotional occurrences when the person is
participating in a sexually stimulating activity such as intercourse and
masturbation.

o Excitement Phase

o Orgasm Phase
o Resolution Phase

THE DIVERSITY OF SEXUAL BEHAVIOR

 SEX – is one’s assignment upon birth and is dependent on physical feature being
male or female.
 GENDER – is an identity that has learned and embraced by individual . It is both a
personal and social construct.
 GENDER ROLES – refers to societal expectations on how men and women should
act.
 GENDER IDENTITY – refers to one’s sense of being male or female
 SEXUAL ORIENTATION – is a person’s emotional and erotic attraction toward
another individual.
 HETEROSEXUAL – labelled as “ Straight” when a man is attracted to a woman ,
when a woman attracted to a man.
 HOMOSEXUAL – when someone is attracted to a person of the same sex.
