Ship Bilge System Calculations

1) The document provides calculations for the oily water bilge system of a bulk carrier ship. It calculates the capacity of the bilge holding tank and sludge tank based on ship dimensions and fuel consumption. 2) It also calculates the diameter of the oily water pipes needed to transfer bilge water from the bilge wells to the holding tank within 30 minutes. 3) Finally, it calculates the static, pressure, and velocity heads as well as the head losses in the suction line for the oily bilge pump.

a. Calculation of Oily Bilge Water Holding Tank Capacity

Based on MEPC 54/21 ANNEX 17 8.5, for main engine above 1,000 up to 20,000 kW the
volume of bilge holding tank can be calculated with :
Vbht = 1.5 + (P-1000)/1500 Where :
= 1.5 + (3000-1000)/1500 P = M/E Power 3000 kW
= 2.833 m3
Plan of bilge water holding tank volume:
Lenght = 1.4 m
Width = 2.1 m
Height = 1.5 m
Volume = 4.41 m3

b. Calculation of Sludge Tank Capacity

According to rule ABS (Part 4 Chapter 6 Section 4 / 5.7.3) capacity of sludge tank can be
arithmetic by this equation :
V = K1 x C x D

1

Calculation and Specification
Rev. No. 00
of Oily-Water Bilge System
Page 1 of 1
Where :
K1 = 0,015, for ship which use HFO and use purifier = 0.015
= 0,005, for ship which MDO or HFO but without use purifier = 0.005
C = Consumption fuel oil one day (m3)
D = Range trip port to port = 9 days

3
- C FO ME = P x SFOC x T γ FO = 0.99 Ton/m
= 3000 x 177 x 24 x 10-6 γ DO = 0.9 Ton/m
3

= 13.608 ton/day
= 13.745 m3/day
- C FO AE = (0.1 - 0.2) x C FO
= 0.2 x13.608
= 2.722 ton/day
= 3.024 m3/day
So (V1 (ME) : So (V2 AE) :
3 3
V1 = K1 x C x D (m ) V2 = K1 x C x D (m )
= 0.015 x 19.05 x 12 = 0.005 x 19.05 x 12
= 1.86 m3 = 0.14 m3
- V tot = V1 + V2
= 1.86 + 0.14
= 1.99 m3
Plan of tank volume :
Length = 1.4 m
Width = 2.1 m
Height = 1.5 m
Volume = 4.41 m3

c. Calculation of Oily Water Pipe Diameter

Oily Water Pump is the pump that transfer the fluid from bilge well to bilge holding tank
Volume of bilge transferred to bilge holding tank = Volume of Bilge Tank = 4.41 m3
In this Design, Oily Water Pump could be used as sludge pump.
So, Calculation of Oily Water/Sludge Pump Capacity (Using Bilge Tank Capacity)
Time needed to fill bilge tank = 30 mnt = 0.75 hours
So, Q= V/t
= 4.41/0.5
= 5.88 m3/h = 0.002 m3/s

Q= A x V = (π d / 4) V V= 1.5 m/s (planned)
d = (( 4 x Q ) / ( π x V ))0,5
= ((4 x 0.002)/(3.14 x 1.5))0.5
= 0.0372441 m
= 37.244055 mm
= 1.4663014 inch

According to the calculation and ABS 2017, Chapter 6-2, 3.1.2 Stainless Steels (2019) ,
specification of selected pipe :
Stainless Steel Pipes for Ordinary Piping by JIS Japan Sizes G 3459
Nominal Diameter = 50A
Inside diameter (dm) = 52.7 mm
Schedule = 40
Thickness = 3.9 mm
Outside diameter = 60.5 mm

d. Head Calculation of Oily Bilge Pump

4.1 Head Static (hs)
Head Static (hs) measured from bilge suction to international shore connection
hs = Distance from Bilge Well Suction -Distance From Keel to Bilge well [m]
hs = T + 0.75 [m]
= 9.415 [m]
= 9.415 [m] Designated

4.2 Head pressure of pump (hp)

The fluid transfer is from the tank to overboard. The tank is located under the suction
side, so head pressure suction is zero, (in Pa = pgh, the value of h is 0), and in the
discharge side has no needed pressure and has no tank, so head pressure in discharge
is zero (in Pa = pgh, the value of h is 0).
P Disc = P Suct
hp = (Pdisch - Psuct) / ρg
hp = 0 m (Pompa dan Kompresor Ir.Sularso,M SME, Page 26)

4.3 Head velocity (hv)

The designed diameter of suction pipe and discharge is same, so acording to Q = VA
formula, the velocity is same, because the Q is constant.

λ = 0.2834
L = Length of Suction in the E/R = 16 m
