INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
This paper consists of six questions.
Answer question one in section A plus three others from section B.
Candidates are advised to read the questions carefully, organise their answers and present
them precisely and logically, illustrating with well labelled diagrams wherever necessary.
SECTION A (40 MARKS)
1. Heat losses (-) and gains (+) were monitored and recorded, of a naked human being at
varying environmental temperatures. The heat losses and gains by the internal body
environment (body core), heat losses and gains by the skin surface as a result of
radiation and convection and also heat losses as a result of evaporation, with varying
environmental temperature, are shown in Figure 1.
Study the figure and answer the questions that follow.

(a) Describe the relationship between the heat loss and gain by the skin surface as a
result of radiation and convection and heat loss as a result of evaporation from the
skin. (04 marks)

(b) How does the relationship in (a) affect the losses and gains of heat by the body
core? (03 marks)
(c) Explain the trend of heat losses and gains by the
(i) Skin surface as a result of radiation and convection. (10 marks)
(ii) Skin surface as a result of evaporation. (08 marks)
(iii) Body core. (12 marks)

(d) What is the importance of maintaining body temperature in animals?(03 marks)

SECTION B: (60 MARKS)

2. (a) Describe the significance of physical properties of water to organisms.

(12
marks)
(b) Explain why lipids are better storage materials in animals than carbohydrates.
(08
marks)

3. (a) Describe the hormonal interactions in the human female from conception to
birth. (10 marks)
(b) Suggest possible causes of infertility in humans. (10 marks)

4. (a) Distinguish between plasmolysis and wilting. (04 marks)

(b) How are xerophytes adapted to survive water shortages? (16 marks)

5. (a) What is meant by genetic drift? (04 marks)

(b) How can the genetic equilibrium of a population be upset? (09 marks)
(c) Explain how humans influence the evolution of species. (07 marks)

(c) Explain how a leguminous plant and the bacteria in its nodules benefit from
their relationship. (07 marks).
