AERAZUR
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL
PNEUMATIC DE-ICERS ATR ENGINE PW 120 AND 121
RECOMMENDATION REFERENCE
A. De-icing equipment requires a minimum amount of maintenance during the period of use.
(1) De-icers are exposed to severe abrasion due to sand and adverse weather conditions.
But experience has shown that most frequent damage results less from natural
causes than from carelessness when installing and removing the de-icers and while
the aircraft is grounded, i.e. scratches and tears made during servicing. Such damage
will be avoided by using lagging of ladders and platforms and by preventing hoses
from chafing on de-icers while refuelling tanks.
(2) The de-icer outer surface has good resistance against weathering (ultra-violet rays
and ozone) and requires no special maintenance in this respect. However the surface
may suffer slight adverse effects from engine oil and greasy exhaust fumes. This outer
surface should therefore be kept absolutely clean, even when it is specially resistant to
oil projections.

2. Description
A. General
(1) The pneumatic de-icer is made of fabric and natural or synthetic rubber.
(2) The outer surface of the de-icer, made of synthetic rubber, has a double purpose:
(a) To resist weathering, abrasion and, in some cases, projections of mineral or synthetic
oils.
(b) To dissipate any static electricity accumulating on the de-icer outer surface during the
flight.
(3) The pneumatic de-icer has two groups of alternately inflating tubes that are supplied with
compressed air through supply tubes. The air is supplied to the de-icing boot by means of 2
metal valves that may or may not be fitted with flexible hosing.
NOTE: Refer to figures 2, 3 and 4 for valves location on the de-icer boots.
3. Operation
A. In Icing Conditions
(1) On flights made in icing conditions, the pneumatic de-icer is used to remove any ice that has
formed in areas of the leading edge, that may interfere with the flight of the aircraft.
(3) The first two stages are obtained by inflating with air the rubber tubes on the outer surface of
the de-icer.
B. In non-icing conditions
(1) The purpose of the de-icer is to maintain the aerodynamic profile of the leading edge.
(2) The tubes are kept flat by the continuous vacuum effect of the de-icer.

(b) Consequently, the ice shedding capability of the de-icer is not impaired by the total
or partial loss of this polyurethane outer ply.
(a) In order to prevent further peeling and lengthen the service life of the boot, it is
necessary to remove all loose parts of the polyurethane ply.
(b) Edge sealing of the cut out zones and protection of the exposed neoprene layer is
achieved by applying a synthetic oil resistant varnish to the damaged areas.
1 Remove the loose ply
a Do not tear off the ply, which would induce even more separation between
both plies. On the contrary, cut carefully with scissors at the edge of the area
where the external ply is still bonded to the black inner ply.

- Moderately buff the surface to protect with emery cloth grade 80.
- Remove dust and particles and clean with a cloth soaked in MEK. without rubbing too
much. Let dry few minutes.
- Mix together 705012 base with 705012 hardener in the following proportions: 33
volume units of 705012 base for 1 volume unit of 705012 hardener. Necessary
quantity: about 250 g per m2 of surface to repair for two coats. The hardened mixture
must be used within 8 hours of mixing.
NOTE: Drying of varnish will only be effective if ambient temperature is higher than +16°C
(+60.8°F).
- Let dry for 4 hours at ambient temperature. Wait 48 hours to obtain a total polymerization.
A. De-icers hoses on ATR42 air intake engine P/N 31 P 158 11-1 are subjects to damage due to
the combined action of motor oil and high temperatures at this location on the aircraft.
B. Cut the stainless steel blocking wire between the valve and the hose fitting and untighten the
hose fitting to remove the hose.
C. Screw the hose fitting on the valve (clockwise for 201-158-109 hose and counter-clockwise for
201-158-110 hose) and tighten with a torque wrench up to a torque of 1.6 mdaN. At the same
time, hold the de-icer valve to prevent it from rotating and thus damaging the de-icer.
D. Insert a stainless steel blocking wire of 0.6 mm diameter between the valve and the hose fitting
and using a pair of appropriate self locking pliers, twist this wire. Make sure that the blocking
wire is in the right position relative to the fitting (thread to the left or right).

NOTE: Clean the de-icer and the Metal Aircraft part before coating, refer to Cleaning section of
this CMM.
(a) Composition
1 Base: Chloroprene rubber, yellow.
(b) Properties
1 Flammable product.
2 Solvent: MEK - toluene.
3 Covering power 250 g/m2 per coat.
4 Polymerization time: 48 hours.
(2) Stir well before use. The cement is ready if it trickles or drips when the stirrer is removed.
(3) Apply one coat of Neoprene cement P/N 706016 to aircraft part without passing over the
same area more than once, to prevent any extra cement thickness.
(4) Proceed in the same manner to apply a second coat and allow the following drying times:
(5) Drying time between first and second coat:
(7) Do not apply cement at temperatures below +16°C and for humidity upper than 70%.
(8) After application of cement and if it is necessary, mark again the axis on the de-icer and on
the leading edge of the air intake Aircraft part.
B. Bonding of de-icer
(a) Mark out on Metal Leading Edge Aircraft Part a reference line corresponding to the
reference line marked out on the de-icer during manufacture.
(b) Protect coated area with Vétronite or equivalent non-adhesive cloth (e.g. teflon),
leaving just a 100 mm (3.93") strip uncovered in area where bonding will start.
(c) If de-icer has to be rolled for transporting, it is advisable to roll it in dry cloth.

YES
FIGURE 701
2 To reactivate, use a clean, non-fraying pad, just moistened with Toluene to avoid
run out. Work over small areas at a time, approximately 100 mm x 300 mm (3.93" x
11.8"), of coated face of de-icer and aircraft part.
3 Use sweeping movements rather than localized rubbing so as not to remove
cement.
4 Wait about ten seconds before bonding de-icer onto aircraft part. Use a rubber or a
Smooth steel roller.
5 Once the bonding operation has begun it is advisable (but not mandatory) to
connect the valves to a vacuum source.
6 Delimit small bond areas with Vétronite or equivalent so that applications of cement
do not overlap.
7 When bonding the de-icer, make sure that no air bubbles are trapped and there
are no wrinkles and twisting.
8 Should this happen, partially loosen the de-icer by instilling Toluene with a squeeze
bootle. Wait a few seconds for the solvent to evaporate. If the cement adheres
properly to both aircraft part and de-icer, bond as before.
9 If there is partial removal of neoprene cement from aircraft part or de-icer when
loosening with Toluene, apply another coat of cement where needed and wait at
least 15 minutes before reactivating with toluene.
10 Roll down de-icer edges thoroughly (non de-icing area) using Rubber or Smooth
steel roller.

D. Verification of bonding
(1) At least half an hour after completion of bonding, de-pressurize de-icer and inspect
entire de-icer surface thoroughly for any blisters. The overall blistered surfaces must not
exceed 13 cm2 (2 sq. in) per 929 cm2 (144 sq. in) of de-icer and no blister may be larger
than 1.5 cm2 (0.23 sq. in). Furthermore, no blister is permitted within 50 mm (1.96") of
any of the de-icer edges.
NOTE: Outside these tolerance limits, blistered areas must be re-bonded.
NOTE: Finishing of edges should not be performed until bonding has been verified.
(1) Some areas of the de-icer have an extra length necessary for bonding that must be cut
off afterwards. Trimming should be performed carefully with a utility knife blade.
