Understanding Traditional Literacy

If all children are to learn, all teachers must teach everything related to literacy, including having students work with self-selected words, engage in shared or guided reading, and do writing activities. Literacy is traditionally defined as the ability to read and write, but it also involves thinking critically and communicating effectively through listening, speaking, and writing across all subject areas. The concept of literacy originated from the Latin word "litteratus," which referred to being marked or identified by letters.

Traditional Literacy
Literacy is defined by dictionaries as the state of
being able to read and writte
In philosophy literacy is the ability to think
critically and communicate effectively
though listening speaking and writing in all
contents.
The word “literacy” stems from the word
“Literate” which appeared in the 15th
Century.
Literacy comes from the
Latin word “Litteratus”
means (a person) marked
with letters – that is
distinguished or identified
with letters”.

Divides this conventional concept of literacy into three


sub categories
Basic Literacy
Comprehension
Literacy
Functional or Practical
Literacy
Without understanding of the meaning of
the words reading has not taken place.
