What is the MELAB?
The Michigan English Language Assessment Battery is an advanced-level English language proficiency test managed by Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments. The test measures competency in the four fundamental language skill areas: writing, listening, reading and speaking. It is intended for adult nonnative speakers of English who will need to use English for academic purposes at the post-secondary level. Who takes the test? The MELAB is mainly for students who are applying to universities in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, where the language of instruction is English. It is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency as an alternative to the TOEFL. The MELAB is also administered to professionals who will need to use English in their work: for example, to nurses who earned their credentials abroad, or to those applying for ICCRC (Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council ) membership. Sections • Listening: An audio-recorded test consisting of short questions, short conversations, and extended radio interviews, which test both general and detailed listening comprehension (35 minutes) • Grammar, Cloze, Vocabulary, Reading (GCVR): 110 multiple-choice questions that test the ability to understand and make independent use of academic language (80 minutes) • Composition: An impromptu composition on a given topic, which is graded for development of ideas, clarity of expression, and language range and accuracy (30 minutes) • Optional Speaking Test: A face-to-face interaction with an examiner who rates the test taker’s overall communicative proficiency (15 minutes)
Scoring and Reporting of MELAB 2019 Results
The scoring of MELAB test papers for Grammar, Cloze, Vocabulary and Reading is done via computer at CaMLA. The writing section is examined by at least two CaMLA certified examiners. Similarly, speaking section is assessed by one CaMLA certified speaking examiner.
The scoring is done in the following way:
A scaled score is calculated using advanced mathematical
model which is based on Item Response Theory. The scaling is done to ensure that scores are comparable across different administrations. The score range for each section in MELAB is as follows:

The minimum final MELAB score for UG program at a state university
is between 80-85. A minimum score of 80 must be secured in each section of the test.
