Instructions: Imagine yourselves writing an updated version of the Noli Me Tangere today. Juxtapose
your observations about the contemporary society with what Rizal saw in the late nineteenth century
Philippines. In the second column on the table below, write Rizal’s observations about the aspect
mentioned. In the third column, write your observations of present day conditions.

REFLECTION: Below are guide questions for you to respond in making your reflection.
1. Compare and contrast the characters, plot, and theme of the Noli Me Tangere and the El
Filibusterismo

NOLI ME TENGERE EL FILIBUSTERISMO

Ibarra was naive. His father was brutally plotted Simoun was hardened by his dark experiences. To

the abused of innocent people.

Both books though share a common theme - that which aims to awaken the oppressed from the
claws of tyranny.

2. Choose three (3) most important characters in the novels and explain why you consider
them as such.
Crisostomo Ibarra – he is politically important character because Rizal uses him to voice ideas
regarding colonialism and the nature of power in the Philippines.
Elias – he is probably the most unique personality in Rizal's Noli, much more than Ibarra. He
personifies all the virtues of the villager, gratitude, abnegation, sacrifice and devotion to country.
Basilio - Basilio played an important role in the novel. He is the first one to know the secret of
Crisostomo Ibarra or Simoun and then Basilio became part of Ibarra's venture.

SYNTHESIS
In this Module, you have studied the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Choose a character
in each of the novel and relate it to current social issues that he/ she represents in the present context of
the country to conclude your realizations about this module.

- In Noli Me Tangere, I have chosen Padre Dámaso,

He is ruthless and snobbish priest. He is corrupt and a liar. He does not think what he says and doesn't
care how others would feel about his words. But still everyone in the town respects him because he
was the curate for almost twenty years before he was replaced by Padre Salvi.

Modern Padre Damaso may no longer apply to our Priests nowadays. Because they no longer as much
power and influence like Padre Damaso did during Rizal's time.

The Damasos now are in the government. They are those who acts rightious and pretends to do good
deeds but do monstrous acts behind. They use their power for corruptions and selfishness. And are
willing to do ruthless acts to their opposers.

- In El Filibusterismo, I have chosen Kabesang Tales,

He was farmer who suffers many struggles in life. Most of which are coursed by the Government.
He's willing to do everything for his children. He later became one of the bandits who fights the
government.

Much of the farming lands in the Philippines are owned by wealthy family or corporations. There are
farmers who are very much like Kabesang Tales. They wanted to earn clean money to feed their
family but treated unfairly. Others lost their farming lands, and some are killed because of red
tagging. Because of theses unfair treatments, many Farmers join protests the government and maybe
there are some who became bandits like Kabesang Tales.
