Hydrological Cycle Assessment Test

This document contains an assessment test on the hydrological cycle consisting of 6 questions. Question 1 requires drawing and labeling the hydrological cycle diagram. Question 2 asks to explain the cycle in point form. Question 3 defines key terms. Question 4 is a matching question matching processes to their descriptions. Question 5 illustrates the cycle through a diagram with terms to identify. Question 6 states whether hydrological cycle statements are true or false.

1. Is naturally occurring water on the Earth's surface in bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers and streams,
and underground as groundwater in aquifers and underground streams
3. The runoff from melting snow.

8 ACROSS
1. The release of water vapor from the earth's surface by evaporation and transpiration
2 .Is the water flow that occurs when soil is infiltrated to full capacity and excess water from
rain, melt water , or other sources flows over the land.
3. The sky condescending to the earth

8. The transfer of a property of the atmosphere , such as heat ,cold , or humidity ,by the
horizontal movement of an air mass
Question 6

STATE WHETHER THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ARE TRUE OR FALSE

1. Evaporating is the process by which plants loose water out of their leaves (1)
2. Collection is when so much water has condensed that air cannot hold (1)
3. Precipitation is any form of water such as rain ,snow ,sleet or hail (1)
4. Condensation is the change of state of water vapor back into water (1)

MEMORANDUM

QUESTION 1
2 marks each concept

QUESTION 2

 Evaporation – when the sun heat up water in rivers or lakes or dam or oceans and
turns it into vapour or steam, the water vapour or steam leaves the river, lake or
ocean and goes into the air. √√
 Transpiration – is the process by which plants loose water out of their leaves√√
The two processes above is called evapotranspiration

 Condensation – water vapor in the air gets cold and changes into liquid,
forming clouds√√

 Precipitation – is when so much water has condensed that air cannot hold it
anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain,
hail, sleet or snow.√√
 Collection – when water falls back to earth as precipitation, it may fall back in the
oceans, lakes or rivers or it may end up on land. When it ends up on land, it will
either be absorbed into the earth and become part of groundwater.√√

QUESTION 3
A .Evaporation, is the transfer of moisture from the earth’s surface into the atmosphere in
the form of water vapour.√√
B .Transpiration, the loss of water from leaves of plants.√√
C .Condensation, is the change of state of water vapor back into water droplets as the
temperature decreases.√√
D .Precipitation, is any form of water such as rain, snow, sleet or hail that falls to earth’s
surface.√√
E .Collection, is the flowing (surface run-off) of rain water back to the oceans, lakes or
dams.√√

QUESTION 4

1. F. hydraulic action √√√

2. C. drought √√
3. B. infiltration √√
4. E. flood √√
5. A. river √√ [10]
