Title: Mixing of multiple streams
Objective: To simulate a mixing unit with multiple multicomponent feed.
Problem Statement: Mixing of four streams of water, sulphuric acid, benzyl acetate and
isopropyl alcohol having composition shown below.
Procedure:
1. Open the Aspen Plus GIU
2. On the property tab, do the following:
Select appropriate input and output units (using METCBAR units)
Fig-1: selection of base units
Select the components used in the simulation from Aspen database.
Fig-2: selection of components
Select the appropriate thermodynamic package.
FIG-3: selection of fluid package
3. Click on simulation tab to open the simulation environment.
Fig-4: opening of simulation environment
Fig-5: simulation environment
4. Click setup in the data browser and select input mode as steady state
Fig-6: selection of steady state mode during simulation
5. Make a flowsheet of the mixing operation as describes below:
From the model library, select Mixer/Splitter and then select a suitable icon from the mixer.
Fig-7: selection of mixer
Move the cross wire at desired location and left click on the mouse to place a block on
process flowsheet window. Right click the mouse when finished. Enlarge the block by
selecting it and dragging out from the corner.
Select the material stream from the steam icon. Some red and blue arrowheads will appear
around the block showing input and output of the block. Red marks are mandatory while
blue marks are optional.
Draw a stream from each desired arrowheads by bring the cursor to it until its color changes
to light blue. Left click once and drag and left click again to place a stream. Right click the
mouse when finished. Make at least two streams as input streams.
Fig-8: Mixing arrangement
Rename the block and streams if desired by right click and then select rename. Type the
name of the block or stream and press OK.
Fig-9: simulation environment
6. Click on Next. A message will be displayed showing,” Flowsheet connectivity is complete.
Provide the remaining problem specifications on input form. Display next input form?” Click OK.
7. On the stream input form select any two conditions of streams from temperature, pressure and
vapor fraction, the total flowrate and composition of stream (flow or fraction) in the appropriate
units. Repeat it for all streams.
Fig-10: selection of base property and there values for all streams
8. Click NEXT. On the block input form select pressure and valid phases. Enter a positive value of
the actual pressure in the mixer or zero or negative value for pressure drop in the mixer. Select
Vapor-Liquid as the valid phases.
Fig-11: selection of pressure and temp units
9. Click Next. A dialog box showing: ”All required input are complete”. You can run the simulation
now, or enter more input. To enter input select cancel and then option you want from the Data
pull down menu. Run the simulation now? Select OK if no further input is enter.
10. Simulation will run and at the end Results are available will appear on left corner.
11. To see the results, select the desired results from the left on the data browser.
