ENRICHED MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

While learning the lesson, you should be able to:
1. identify and describe techniques in separating the components of
heterogeneous mixtures such as decantation, evaporation, filtering, sieving and
using a magnet; and
2. separate the components of a mixture using decantation, evaporation, filtering,
sieving and using a magnet.

A. INTRODUCTION

Opening Prayer:

Dear Father,

Shower us with Your grace as we perform our tasks that will enable us to
separate mixtures. Instil in us the value of gratitude to for us to see the good
benefits of all the things we do. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus.
Amen

In your previous modules, you learned that a mixture is the blending of two or
more substances. A major characteristic of mixtures is that the substances combined
to form a mixture do not chemically combine. Mixtures can be grouped into those that
are uniform (homogeneous) and non-uniform (heterogeneous) which can be
beneficial or harmful. Now, you will discover different ways on how to separate
components of mixtures and when do we use these techniques.

B. DISCUSSION

Good day, Louisian! Are you ready for our next

lesson? Before we start let’s have a quick review
(heterogeneous)
about mixtures by answering this activity.

Identify if the mixture is heterogeneous or homogenous. Then list the components of

each mixture represented by the picture. Write your answer on the space provided.

Motive/Reflection Question:
Is it possible to separate the components of mixtures? If yes, describe one way
on how you can do it.

I can see that you can already identify the components of

mixtures and you are correct if you said that it is possible to
separate their components.
I would like you to conduct these investigative activities with
your parent/guardian for you to find out how you can separate
components of some mixtures. Be careful and have fun!

Separating Components of Mixtures

I. Problem: How are components of mixtures separated?

II. Materials:
spoon small bowl mixed nuts 1 tablespoon salt
stove sifter/strainer 1 tsp. flour cup with 200 ml water
small plate cooking pan 2 tbs. sugar

III. Procedures: IV. Observations:

1.What kind of mixture do you have?
2. What method did you apply to separate
the components of the mixture?

Activity 1
1. Pour the mixed nuts in a small plate.
2. Separate the components using your
hand.

Activity 2
1. Mix the flour and sugar in a small
bowl.
2. Separate the fine particles of the
mixture using a strainer/sifter.

4|SCIENCE 6
Activity 3
1. Prepare a salt solution by dissolving
salt in water.
2. Pour the salt solution in the cooking
pan.
3. Heat the solution until the water
evaporates and salt remains in the
pan.
Activity 4: Volunteer to wash the rice
for your family meal.
1. Put rice in a pot, then add water.
2. Manually (with clean hands) stir and
mix the rice.
3. Pour the water to get rid of any
starch, bugs, and contaminants.
4. Repeat washing the rice with water 3
times to ensure that they
are clean and ready to cook.

V. Conclusion:
I, therefore conclude that ______________________________________________________

components of some mixtures?

GOOD JOB for successfully conducting your investigative

activities! Let us discuss what you found out in your
investigative activity and what are the other techniques
that you can use to separate the components of mixtures
by watching the video saved in your OTG flash drive and
reading your book on pages 90 - 93 (2017 Edition) or pages
66-72 (2020 edition).

Here is a table that summarizes the techniques in separating mixtures and when are
they used.

Ways to Separate Mixtures

Filtration ✓ used in separating insoluble solids in liquid
✓ filter like mesh cloth or filter paper is
used to separate solid components from a liquid

Evaporation ✓ used in soluble solids from a liquid.

✓ uses heat to evaporate the liquid component
leaving the solid component in the container

Decantation ✓ used in separating less-dense component from

denser one.
✓ less dense substance can be separated by
scooping or it can be separated by slowly pouring
out the less-dense component if left undisturbed
Sieving ✓ used in mixtures with big and fine solid components
✓ involves the use of a strainer or a big screen to
separate the components of solids

Use of Magnet ✓ used in metal and nonmetal mixtures

✓ magnet is used to attract the metal component
from the non-metal component

Process/Comprehension Question:
Can we use two or more techniques in separating the components of
mixtures? Cite an example.

e l a b o r a t e Different components of a mixture are separated to either separate the
un-required components from a mixture or to separate more than
one useful component from a mixture. For example, in your previous
activity, rice grains purchased by your parents from shops can contain
several impurities such as pieces of stone, husk, broken grains, etc. Thus,
the grain is separated from these impurities to make it edible by picking
the stones and applying decantation.

Separation Techniques are not only beneficial in your homes but also in different kinds
of industries and companies. They use different techniques to separate components
from raw materials for them to produce their products or to their liking.

The water we drink comes from rivers and lakes? But it contains impurities and germs.
Separation is necessary to remove these impurities. Different water companies have
modern ways of water treatment to make it potable like the distillation and purification
process.

We will be discussing more about the benefits of separating mixtures in our next
module. In preparation, I would like you to read/search for processes/techniques that
are used by industries and companies to separate components of mixtures and its
benefits for the community.

To check how well you understood our past lessons, answer

the long quiz below. Use your ANSWER SHEET found at the
end of the module.
