Basic Set-up of a Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW) Machine
PREFACE
This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) will enhance your ability to identify the different Shielded Metal Arc
Welding (SMAW) machine parts and accessories. This material is designed for Grade 9 to 12 students
who need remediation and who are willing to learn in self-paced mode.
You must be familiar with the parts and accessories of a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
machine because it is vital in producing good quality welds. To achieve the Learning Outcomes (Set-
up welding machine and its accessories) in Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC I, this kit is mainly focused
on the different parts, functions, and accessories of a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) machine.
For you to start, remember to do the following tips to successfully achieve the objectives
of the Self-Learning Kit; keep the material in good condition and neat all the time; do not write
any unnecessary things on its pages; use separate paper for your answer sheet; read and follow
instructions carefully; answer the given task before you start the lesson; take note and record points
of clarification; try to achieve at least 80% level of proficiency in every activity; work diligently and
honestly; answer the activities thoroughly and find out the given descriptors in the progress chart after
having self-evaluation of the activities.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, with at least 80% level of proficiency, you should be able to:
1. identify the parts and functions of a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
machine in accordance with the manufacturer’s manual;
2. list down safety precautions in a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
machine set-up; and
3. produce the proper set-up of a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) machine.

a SMAW machine, continue reading this SLK.
SET-UP A SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING (SMAW) MACHINE
AND ITS ACCESSORIES
According to K to 12 Basic Education Program Learning Material for Shielded Metal
Arc Welding (SMAW), a typical Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) machine will have the
following parts and functions as illustrated in the figure below;

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?
These are the parts and functions of a SMAW machine and its accessories.
1. Carry handle - used to transport the welding machine
2. Current setting gauge - indicates the current setting of the welding machine
3. Power switch - turns the welding machine on and off.
4. Current regulating knob - used to increase/decrease the current setting
5. Electrode holder - holds the welding electrode
6. Earth/Ground clamp - also called the return cable or the negative
7. Overload indicator - indicates an overload event
8. Cooling fan - maintains/ prevents over temperature of the machine
9. Wire brush/chipping - used to clean and remove slags
hammer
10. Welding shield - used to protect the eyes and face of the welder

The function of a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) machine is to provide the required
current and voltage to maintain an arc between the electrode and the base metal and sufficiently
supply electricity to fuse the base metal and the end of the electrode.
The SMAW machine depending on the type and capability can provide direct current (DC) or
alternating current (AC) to the electrode. AC type SMAW machines are most common and cost less
than the DC types, however, in terms of operational costs and functionality the DC or Rectifier type
machines present more advantages.
Types of Power Sources of a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Machine
AC Transformers
Alternating current SMAW machines are
simply step-down transformers. The welding current
can be varied or adjusted by altering the gap
between the primary and secondary winding.
DC Generators
An internal combustion engine rotates the
armature of the generator, generates electricity
which in turn powers the welding machine. Normally
used when no AC power
source is available.
10

Types of Power Sources of a Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Machine
Transformer Rectifier
Converts AC voltage to DC voltage via the rectifiers, which in turn supplies DC volt-
age to the electrode.
REMINDER:
In setting up a SMAW machine, it is a must to follow safety precautions. Read on to
learn these safety precautions.
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Machine set-up safety precautions
Here are some safety precautions in performing a SMAW machine set-up;
1. Make sure that all the parts of the welding machine are working properly.
2. Check the cables for any insulation breakage.
3. Connect electrode holder /ground clamp cables according to the required
polarity of the of the welding application.
4. Replace if not repair worn out parts, do not use malfunctioning parts or accessories.
5. Do not connect the SMAW machine to its power source while doing the
SMAW machine set- up.
