Good Housekeeping System (5 S)
Proper Waste Disposal
Two Main Types of Salon Waste
How to Dispose Salon Waste
After reading and understanding the contents, find out how much you can
remember and how much you have learned by accomplishing the practice tasks and
post-test.
Good Housekeeping System (5 S)
What is 5 S all about?
5S is a process designed to organize the workplace, keep it clean, and maintain
effective and standard conditions. Many enterprises have practiced the 5S and derived
significant benefits from it. In particular, this technique has been widely practiced in Japan.
Most Japanese practitioners consider 5S useful not just for improving their physical
environment, but also for improving their thinking processes too.
In Japan it is also called “workplace management”. It will be needed if the workplace
is messy and unorganized. It will also be needed if employees spends extra time in searching
tools, papers and information.
5S is the acronym for five Japanese words Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke
and they represent the five steps for a systematic technique for good housekeeping.
1. Seiri (Sort)

2. Seiton (Systematize)
ORDERLINESS
Tools, equipment, and materials must be systematically arranged for the easiest
and most efficient access.
Arrange /organize necessary items in good condition.
Assign a place for everything for easy access and returning of the equipment, tools
and even documents.

3. Seiso (Sweep)
CLEANLINESS
Cleaning even if things are not dirty. Regular cleaning prevents things from
getting too dirty that it would be difficult to make it clean.
Indicates the need to keep the work place clean.

PROPER WASTE DISPOSAL
Proper Waste Disposal refers to the process in keeping waste materials or products in
the proper place to avoid contamination.
It is important that waste matter is disposed of correctly in the salon. Separate all
waste. Some items, such as blades must be disposed of in special containers for sharp
items. Empty chemical containers should be wrapped in plastic before putting them in
the dustbin to ensure there are no leakages. All waste bins should have a self-closing
lid.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
REDUCE
Reduce the amount of materials and goods you consume. This might mean
limiting the amount of purchases you make. Avoid impulse buying.
REUSE
Reusing is the act of taking old items that you might consider throwing away
and finding a new use for them.
REYCLE
Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would
otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products.
THE TWO MAIN TYPES OF SALON WASTE
Clinical Waste
Clinical waste includes items such as wax strips, pads, cotton wool buds, and
others tools used or treatments, like electrolysis and microdermabrasion.
Clinical waste splits into subcategories, including hazardous waste (like sharps)
and offensive waste (items potentially contaminated in bodily fluids).
These waste products have to be kept separately and in individual bins. No throwing
needles and cotton buds together. Remember, contaminated or potentially harmful
wastes fall under strict disposal regulations.
General Waste
General waste for salons could include anything from client’s hair to random rubbish
like uncontaminated tissues or broken coat hangers.
HOW TO DISPOSE SALON WASTE
Special Waste Bins
Regulation sharps bins are puncture-proof with sealed lids to ensure the utmost safety
of the person holding it. Sharps bins are typically needed in a salon for various beauty
utensils.
Offensive waste bins are also required for a range of used materials.
Sanitary bins are necessary for washrooms.
General Waste Bins
General waste should be placed in a black bin. The size of the bin is dependent on
how much waste is usually accumulated in the salon.
