Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji

(10th Sikh Guru)
(1666-1708 AD)

A Saint and a Soldier

By
Commander Balvir Singh
< siqgur pRswid]
Writing about Guru Gobind Singh’s life is a very difficult task as his life was packed with actions to
spread the teachings of Guru Nanak for uplifting the moral fiber of Indian society and protecting
them from the errant rule of Mughals who always considered Hindus as “Kafir”.

It was during the rule of Aurangazeb, that the atrocities on Hindu religion peaked. If we see the
political map of India*; it may be seen that the Mughal rule which was restricted to Northern,
Central and Eastern part of India before ascent of Aurangazeb was expanded to the extreme
southern part India, thus making it one of the biggest empire of Asia & Europe. He had an annual
revenue of $ 450 million, ten times more than that of his contemporary Louis XIV of France. Such
was the scale of his wealth and military power he commanded .

Maratha’s Chhatrapatti Shivaji’s death in 1680 and Aurangazeb's capturing and execution of
Sambhaji in 1687 reduced Marathas as a divided and weak opposition. Southern rulers were
mainly concerned with saving their Kingdom. However opposition to the rule of Aurangazeb
continued by a few Kings, but it was not strong enough to stop his anti Hindu tirade and
expansionist plan. Hindus were, a divided and a weak community and had no courage to stand up
and save themselves . A large population was converting under pressure from the Mughal rule.

At this time, the Sikh Gurus held the hand of the Hindus and sacrificed their lives and family for
saving the nation and the Hindu religion. Guru Tegh Bahadar Ji, in 1675 ,sacrificed his life to oppose
Aurangazeb’s policy of conversion of Kashmiri Hindus to Muslim.
Cont- Next
A large number of Hindus mainly from the lower strata of society were attracted towards Sri Guru
Guru Gobind Rai (Singh) Ji and joined him in his mission. Sri Guru Gobind Rai (Singh) at the age of
9 years changed the concept of religion, in which a religious person was required to be complete
Saint and Soldier (Saint & Sipahi).

Guru Ji at the age of 33 years; Created Khalsa (The pure one) in 1699. Guru ji himself made
innumerable personal sacrifices by Sacrificing his father Guru Tegh Bahadar Ji, his four young son’s
and mother Mata Gujri Ji besides many of his loved ones. This changed the course of History,
Khalsa (Sikhs) became a dominant force in north India in a short span of time and blocked the
“Hindu Kush valley” which was the only route of the invaders for centuries. This completely cut off
access to India for the invaders and their supply and trade route. Consequently, the Mughal rule
fell apart in a very quick time and ended in India.

A few of the quotes in poetry of some prominent writers are placed in the beginning of this article
to understand the greatness of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Please note most of these noted writers
were Muslim; all the more important that we project a true picture of great Guru Gobind Singh Ji
to the mankind and remain indebted to Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji .

Kashmir's Pandits in Darbar of
Guru Tegh Bahadar Ji
Kashmir's Pandits in Darbar of
Guru Tegh Bahadar Ji
• In May 1675 Pandit Kirpa ram with a group of Pandit’s came to Anandpur where he
narrated their woes and sough his help and protection.
• While Guru Tegh Bahadar Ji was listening to them, (Guru) Gobind Rai (Singh) who was
just 9 years old asked his father why Pandits are so disturbed ?
• Guru Tegh Bahadar Ji told him about atrocities of the Mughal rulers, He continued
and said “Some one will have to make a Supreme sacrifice to stop conversion of Hindus
to Muslim”.
• Guru Gobind Ji said “Guru Ji “ Who could be better person than you yourself ”.
• Kashmir Pandits conveyed Guru Tegh Bahadar ji’s dictate. Aurangzeb as such was of the
opinion that Guru Tegh Bahadur had become a socio-political challenge to the Muslim
and to his rule . He was also aware of battles fought by 6th Guru Hargobind Ji with
Sahajahan and 7th Guru Har Rai ji helping his brother Dara Shikoh while he was on the
run after failed revolt against him. Aurangzeb issued order of Guru Ji’s arrest.
• Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji was aware of Aurangzeb's reaction. He left Anandpur
Sahib in July 1675 for Delhi to make the ultimate sacrifice for the Kashmiri pandits
to save their religion.
Martyrdom to save Hindu religion
• At Agra he offered his arrest and he was taken to Delhi by Kotwal Nizam
Safi Khan and Kiledar Mulatfat Khan.Bhai Mati Das ji, Bhai Dyala Ji and
Bhai Sati Das Ji were also taken in custody.
• Guru Ji told Bhai Uda ji and Bhai Gurditta Ji who were also accompanying
him not to give their arrest and were tasked to manage situation in Delhi
after their arrest and inform Anandpur Sahib.
• Aurangzeb had already issued orders to arrest and Kill Guru Tegh Bahadarji
if he did not accept conversion to Islam.
• In order to intimidate Guru Ji, the Kazi’s (Islamic magistrates) made a plan
to torture other Sikhs to death before the eyes of Guru. They thought that
the Guru would embrace Islam out of fear seeing the Sikhs murdered.
They executed this plan mercilessly.

One day, a group of Sikh pilgrims arrived in Anandpur. The leader of one group, on seeing the
Guru, made this request."Only yesterday as we were on our way to you, a party of Mughal
soldiers stopped us and robbed us. They took some of our valuable and in scuffle some of our
friends were killed.
The Guru listened to the Sikhs and calmly replied, "Wait and pray to God. Very soon you
will find guardians for the people everywhere."

The Guru then introduced a new kind of initiation ceremony called the Amrit (Baptism). He put pure
water into an iron bowl. He stirred the water with a Khanda (Double edged sword) while the five Sikhs
recited the sacred verses (the Japji, the Jap Sahib, the Anand Sahib, the Swayye and the Chaupai ). Mata
Sahib Kaur Ji also put some patasa (sugar puff) in it.
*Image via Bing

Thus the Amrit was ready and the Guru asked the five to repeat
"Waheguru ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh" while he took the
Amrit in the palms of his hands and baptised each one of them
with it and gave them a new name - 'Singh'.

Then he himself was baptised by 'the five' and

called himself Gobind Singh.

Sahibzada (Baba) Ajit Singh Ji at Chamkaur

Sahibzada (Baba) Ajit Singh Ji was Guru Ji's eldest son, born to Mata
Sundhri Ji on 9th November 1686 at Anandpur Sahib. He received the gift
of Amrit from the Panj Piaray on Baisakhi 1699. In the battle of Sarsa he
had commanded the rear guard of Guru Ji's camp.

In the Chamkaur fortress Baba Ajit Singh Ji had seen the Sikh warriors go
out in fives and die heroic deaths. He approached his father and asked if
he could be next. Guru Ji took him in his arms and blessed him.

Guru Ji sent him out with five Sikhs - Alim Singh, Jawahar Singh, Dhyan
Singh, Sukha Singh and Bir Singh.

The enemy fell before them as shrubs in a wind storm as they fought with
great valour. When their arrows had been spend and swords broken they
fell one by one. Sahibzada (Baba) Ajit Singh at the tender age of 18 years
died in battle as befitting a Sikh of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

• Sahibzada (Baba) Jujhar Singh Ji was Guru Gobind Singh Ji's second
son. Born on 27th November 1690 to Mata Jito Ji at Anandpur
Sahib. Like his elder brother Baba Ajit Singh Ji he received the gift of
Amrit from the Panj Piaray on Baisakhi 1699.
• By the time Baba Ajit Singh Ji had fallen in battle at Chamkaur there
were only 10 Sikhs left in the fortress. Baba Jujhar Singh Ji had
watched from the roof top, he approached his father and asked to
follow his brother.
• Guru Ji embraced him and blessed him. Guru Ji sent out 5 more
Sikhs with Baba Jujhar Singh Ji.
• The enemy dropped on them like the monsoon rains. Baba Jujhar
Singh Ji leapt into the enemy ranks and fought fearlessly, the
moghals surprised to see such a young adversary. Baba Jujhar Singh
Ji at the tender age of 14 years fell in battle as befitting a son of
Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji a Damdama Sahib
with Bhai Mani Singh Ji
• After the historic battle in
Mukatsar. Guruji arrived in
Talwandi Sabo in the Year 1705
situated on a high elevated small
piece land. Here Guruji took a
break & relaxed. Due to this
reason this pious piece of land is
famous as Damdama Sahib.
• From Damdama sahib Guruji
released orders (Hukamnama) for
Sikh Desciples.
• According to Dr. Trump's writings
in 1706 Guruji Baptised around
1.2 lac devotees on the occasion
of Baisakhi's Get together(Jor
Mela).
Guru Gobind Singh Ji a Damdama
Sahib
• Guru Tegh Bahadur had called Talwandi Sabo Guru ki Kashi, predicting that "many
scholars, philosophers, theologians, copyists with elegant hand, students and
devotees will adorn the place." The prophecy came true when learned Sikhs
poured in from far and near to be with Guru Gobind Singh. Among them was Bhai
Mani Singh who came from Delhi escorting Mata Sundari and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji .
• Guru Gobind Singh had Bhai Mani Singh prepare a fresh copy of the Guru Granth
Sahib under his own supervision. It was at this time when the hymns of Guru Tegh
Bahadar Sahib Ji, the ninth Guru were added to the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
• Anyatulla the writer of “Ahikam Alamgiri” states that a letter of Aurangzeb was
received by Guru Gobind Singh Ji through Shek Mohamad Yar Masabar and
Mohamad Beg Gujar in which he requested pleaded Guru Gobind Singh ji meet
him in southern india as he was able to move due to sickness, He had specific
instruction to his men to make suitable arrangement for Guru Ji’s travel through
Rajputana and Central India.
• Guru Ji had moved from Damdam Sahib and was in Malwa region when news of
death of Aurangzeb was received by him.
1708 at Nande Sahib
• Aurangzeb died in 1707, and immediately a
succession struggle began between his sons
who attacked each other. The official
successor was Bahadur Shah, who invited
Guru Gobind Singh with his army to meet
him in person in the Deccan region of India,
for a reconciliation but Bahadur Shah then
delayed any discussions for months.
• Guru Ji left his company and proceeded to
Nanded where he baptized Baba Banda
Singh Bahadar.
• Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji gave 5 Arrows ,
Kirpan and asked Baba Banda Singh Bahadar
to go to Punjab, Organize Sikhs and punish
those involved in killing 4 Sahibjade and
various Sikhs.
Last days of Guru Gobind SinghJi

• Wazir Khan a Muslim army commander and the Nawab of Sarhandh,

against whose army the Guru had fought several wars, commissioned two
Afghans, Jamshed Khan and Wasil Beg, to follow the Guru's army as it
moved for the meeting with Bahadur Shah, and then assassinate the
Guru. The two secretly pursued the Guru whose troops were in the
Deccan area of India, and entered the camp when the Sikhs had been
stationed near river Godavari for months. They gained access to the Guru
and Jamshed Khan stabbed him with a fatal wound at Nanded .
• According to Senapati's Sri Gur Sobha, an early 18th century writer, the
fatal wounds of the Guru was one below his heart. The Guru fought back
and killed the assassin, while the assassin's companion was killed by the
Sikh guards as he tried to escape.
Guru Granth Ji is Eternal Guru of Sikhs
“Granth Ji manyo pargat Guran ki deh..”
• He called his fellow Sikhs to come and then opened the Granth Sahib, placed five
paise and solemnly bowed to it as his successor, GURU GRANTH SAHIB. Saying
'Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh', he walked around the Guru Granth
Sahib and proclaimed, "O beloved Khalsa, let him who desireth to behold me, behold
the Guru Granth. Obey the Granth Sahib. It is the visible body of the Gurus. And let
him who desires to meet me, search me in the hymns."
• He then sang his self-composed hymn: "Agya bhai Akal ki tabhi chalayo Panth Sabh
Sikhan ko hukam hai Guru manyo Granth Guru Granth Ji manyo pargat Guran ki
deh Jo Prabhu ko milbo chahe khoj shabad mein le Raj karega Khalsa aqi rahei na
koe Khwar hoe sabh milange bache sharan jo hoe."
Translation of the above:
"Under orders of the Immortal Being, the Panth was created. All the Sikhs are
enjoined to accept the Granth as their Guru. Consider the Guru Granth as
embodiment of the Gurus. Those who want to meet God, can find Him in its hymns.
The Khalsa shall rule, and its opponents will be no more, Those separated will unite
and all the devotees shall be saved."

My humble effort to write on Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s who changed the role of Saint to be complete as Saint
and Soldier. I hope this booklet will help understand his social mission of “ Manas Ke Jat Sabhe Eko Pahicanbo” (All
are children of one God). ( ihMdU qurk koaU rwPjI iemwm swPI, mwns kI jwq sbY eykY pihcwnbo] )
Suggestion for improvement are welcome. Thanks.
