1.1 Introduction
Figure 1 Location of Mahad in Raigad district (Source: - www.MRSAC.gov.in)
Mahad is a city in Raigad district situated in the North Konkan region of Maharashtra state, India.
Surrounded by Sahyadri Mountains and thus low-lying area prone to floods. Receives highest

3 Reasons for flooding
Major reasons of flooding are physiographic and climatic factors, topographic features,
Reclamation of low laying areas, Silting of Savitri river, poor drainage and storm water
network, shallow water course of the river.
topography which shows lower elevation compared to its outer areas creates water
saturation. Heavy precipitation in Mahabaleshwar region(origin of Savitri river)causes river

to get overflooded. Open and inadequate drains get chocked and poor storm water networks
cause water to enter the city. High tide also adds up to the rise in river water
Construction in the zone of blue and red flood line negates water percolation in the ground
thus inducing flood like situation.
