Planning Phase Topic 2 Activity: Case Study

The document contains responses to planning phase topic 2 activity questions from a student. 1. The student describes the major elements of Rapid Application Development as prototyping and iterative development, and notes issues can include destroying the overall project into multiple versions, though it can improve quality and speed. 2. Unreasonable deadlines often result from sudden changes or failed planning. Project managers should accurately estimate completion dates and address client doubts. 3. Companies hire consultants for initial planning and project management but use internal analysts and programmers, as they are already skilled and trained within the company on specialized tasks. The case study asks what methodology the student would recommend for a company building a new knowledge management system across offices.

PLANNING PHASE TOPIC 2 ACTIVITY

After reading or browsing of the first module and chapter discussion provided, answer the following
questions based on your understanding.
As much as possible, answers should be on your own words and not copied from any book or article in
the internet. Answers per item should be at least 30 words but not to exceed 100 words.

1. Describe the major elements and issues with Rapid Application Development.
• The major elements of Rapid Application Development are prototyping and iterative development.
Regarding the issues of Rapid Application Development, though it can increase the speed very
quickly, one of the issues of its element can also destroy or break the overall project into variety
of versions. Though it can improve the quality and speed of developing a system, problem may
still occur. In my perspective, though you can benefit from it, there are still problems that it can
give you. While we are getting benefits from it, there are still disadvantages in using this as
methodology.

2. Why do many projects end up having unreasonable deadlines? How should a project manager react to
unreasonable demands?
• For me, many projects end up having unreasonable deadlines due to sudden changes along the
process of doing the project. This may also due to uncontrolled or unreasonable changes while
doing the project. In addition to this, this may also due to failed planning because if a project
manager is really hands-on on the project, he must consider all possibilities in doing the project.
• Project manager should tell a client about the project carefully like for example, tell the client the
estimated date of completion of the project and when telling it, a project manager must say the
most accurate estimation so that the client will not end up having lots of doubt on you as a project
manager.

3. Some companies hire consulting firms to develop the initial project plans and manage the project, but
use their own analysts and programmers to develop the system. Why do you think some companies do
this?
• They still use their own analysts and programmers because they are skilled and well-trained within
the company and they are knowledgeable enough to perform tasks that requires high level of skills.
Companies hires new staffs to train them so that they’ll soon be skilled to perform difficult tasks.
This is also because company needs unique skills so that some companies still uses their own
analysts and programmers to develop the system in their companies.

Case Study:

Suppose that you are an analyst for the ABC Company, a large consulting firm with offices around the
world. The company wants to build a new knowledge management system that can identify and track the expertise
of individual consultants anywhere in the world on the basis of their education and the various consulting projects
on which they have worked. Assume that this is a new idea that has never before been attempted in ABC or
elsewhere. ABC has an international network, but the offices in each country may use somewhat different
hardware and software. ABC management wants the system up and running within a year.
What methodology would you recommend that ABC Company use? Why?

• I think the methodology that I would recommend to ABC Company is the Rapid Application
Development specifically the Throwaway prototyping. Since the company wants to build a new
knowledge management system, using this methodology will make it easier for them to develop
new ideas for the system. It will undergo a thorough analysis that would be beneficial to gather
requirements and ideas that leads to a quick building of the new knowledge management system.
RAD also uses special techniques and computer tools that will make it more easier for the company
to formulate, develop and implement the new idea.
