PIPETTES
RBC Thoma pipette and WBC Thoma pipette
    - The RBC pipette is identified by the red bead in the bulb, and the WBC pipette by the white bead
in the bulb. Both are cleaned as follows. Attach the devices provided to the end of a pipette.
Rinse (fill and empty) the pipette thoroughly by drawing and expelling a dilute bleach mixture
(2.5%) several times. Repeat this procedure substituting distilled water as a rinse. Next, alcohol
(95%) is used for two rinses. Finally, acetone or ether is used for two rinses. Air is then forced
through the pipette until it is dry.

        Storage
    - Store pipettes vertically to avoid contamination.
    - Store pipettes dialed to highest volume setting.
    - Store away from heat and moisture.
    - Pipette tips should be removed prior to storage.
    - Keep pipettes clean and free of contaminants
    - When cleaning pipettes with bleach solution, do not saturate as fluid can make its way to the
        piston and cause corrosion.

Sahli Pipette
    - The Sahli calibrated graduated cylinder must be cleaned after each use by washing with soapy
water and rinsing with clean water.

Pasteur Pipette
    - You should clean and re-use your Pasteur pipets when possible. Do it immediately, before the
chemical dries on the pipet and makes it impossible to clean. If the pipet has only been used for
a solvent (pure hexanes, ether, ethanol, etc.), simply let it dry. If it has been used for a solution
of a solid compound in a solvent, or for an aqueous acid or base, rinse it with the minimum
amount necessary to get the bulk of the chemical off - use water or acetone - into the
appropriate waste container, then rinse it fully under running water. Put it in your lab drawer
and it will be ready for use at your next lab meeting.

    - Keep it clean between uses by storing it upright in clean glassware (such as a beaker or
Erlenmeyer flask). If the pipet is broken or cannot be used again for any other reason, rinse any
chemicals off (discard the rinse in the appropriate waste container) and then dispose of the
        pipet in the glass waste.

Improvised suction device
    - The suction canister should be emptied daily and washed, along with the connecting tubing, in
hot water and mild dishwashing detergent. Rinse with clean, hot tap water. It is recommended
that these items be disinfected daily with a solution of one part white vinegar and 3 parts water.
Allow the items to soak for 30 minutes and then rinse with clean, hot tap water.

    - 1. Gather your equipment and supplies:
    - one container filled with warm, soapy water (use mild dish-washing soap)
    - second container filled with one part white vinegar and three parts water
    - clean cloth
    - clean towel
    - 2. Remove the short tubing from the lid. Remove the canister, take the lid off, and empty the
        contents into the toilet.
    -
    - 3. Place all parts of the canister in the first container filled with warm, soapy water then rinse
        with tap water.
    -
    - 4.Place all parts of the canister in the second container filled with vinegar and water, soak for 30
minutes, then rinse with tap water.
    -
    - 5. Place all parts on a clean, dry towel and allow to air dry.

Forceps
    - Immediately after use, rinse instruments under warm or cool running water to remove all blood,
body fluids and tissue. Dried soils may damage the instrument surface and make cleaning very
difficult. Do not use hot water as this will coagulate proteinous substances.
    - Rinse instruments thoroughly under running water. While rinsing, open and close scissors,
hemostats, needle holders and other hinged instruments to ensure that hinge areas are also
rinsed. Dry instruments thoroughly with a clean towel. This minimizes the risk of corrosion and
formation of water spots. Use spray lubricant in the hinges to improve function of instrument.

Staining rack
    - Wet your scrub brush or toothbrush with hot water, add a dab of soap, and gently scrub at
stains to remove them. Make sure to scrub the entire rack thoroughly in addition to focusing on
          stains.

    - Rinse the glassware with the appropriate solvent. Use deionized water for water-soluble
contents. Use ethanol for ethanol-soluble contents, followed by rinses in deionized water. Rinse
with other solvents as needed, followed by ethanol and finally deionized water. If the glassware
requires scrubbing, scrub with a brush using hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly with tap water,
followed by rinses with deionized water.
