1. Calculate the pitch factor for the given windings: (a) 36 stator slots, 4-poles, coil span 1 to 8
(b) 72 stator slots, 6-poles, coil span 1 to 10 and (c) 96 stator slots, 6-poles, coil span 1 to 12.
2. A 3-phase, 6 poles alternator has a star-connected winding with 54 slots and 8 conductors per
slot. The flux per pole is 0.09 Wb sinusoidally distributed and the speed is 1000 rpm. Find the
frequency of generated voltage and the line voltage. Assume the coil to be chorded or short by
five slots.
3. Calculate the distribution factor for a 36-slots, 4-pole, single layer three phase winding.

leading.
9. In a 50 kVA, star connected, 440 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz alternator, the effective armature
resistance is 0.25 ohm per phase. The synchronous reactance is 3.2 ohm per phase and leakage

reactance is 0.5 ohm per phase. Determine at rated load and unity PF: (a) internal EMF E, (b)
no load EMF E0, (c) percentage regulation on full-load, (d) value of synchronous reactance
which replaces armature reaction.
10. Find the synchronous impedance and reactance of an alternator in which a given field current
produces an armature current of 200A on short-circuit and a generated EMF of 50V on open-
circuit. The armature resistance is 0.1 ohm. To what induced voltage must the alternator be
excited if it is to deliver a load of 100A at a p.f. of 0.8 lagging, with a terminal voltage of 200V.
11. Find the synchronous impedance and synchronous reactance of an alternator in which a given
field current of 20A produces an armature current of 200A on short-circuit and a generated
e.m.f of 50 V on open-circuit. The effective armature resistance is 0.1 ohm. Find the voltage

voltage is 3200V and the same excitation produces a short circuit of 70A. Effective resistance
of the armature per phase is 0.60Ω. Determine the voltage regulations for unity power factor
and also for 0.8 lagging power factor. (Use synchronous impedance method).

16. Find the power angle when 1500 kVA, 6.6 kV, 3-phase, Y-connected alternator having a
resistance of 0.4 ohm and a reactance of 6 ohm per phase delivers full-load current at normal
rated voltage and 0.8 PF lag. Draw the phasor diagram.
17. Two single-phase alternators operating in parallel have induced EMFs an open circuit of
230∠0o and 230∠10o volts and respective reactance of j2 ohm and j3 ohm. Calculate (i)
terminal voltage, (ii) currents, and (iii) power delivered by each of alternators to a load of
impedance 6 ohm (resistive).
18. A 3000 kVA, 6 pole alternator runs at 1000 rpm in parallel with other machine on 3300 V bus
bars. The synchronous reactance of both machines is 25% of the voltage per phase. Calculate
the synchronizing power for one mechanical degree of displacement and the corresponding

19. Two identical 3-phase alternators work in parallel and supply a total load of 1500 kW at 11 kV
