Solving Problems Involving Variations
Learning Competencies: Solves problems involving variations. (M9AL-IIb-c-
1)
What I Need to Do
Now, that you have gained analytical concept on how to deal with
direct variation, inverse variation, joint variation and combine variation. In
this lesson you will enhance your problem-solving skill in dealing with
situations about different types variation.
Gearing Up
Now, that you have gained analytical concept on how to deal with
variations, this lesson will enhance your problem-solving skill in dealing
with situations about inverse variation.
Example No. 1
The number of hours required to finish a certain job varies inversely as the
number of persons on the job. If 9 persons require 10 hours to finish the
job, how long should it take for 30 persons to finish the job?
Solution:
Let t - number of hours required to finish the job
n - number of people on this job.
The equation:

Example No. 2
The area A of a triangle varies jointly as the base b and the altitude a of the
triangle. If A = 65cm2 when b =10cm and a =13cm, find the area of a triangle
whose base is 8cm and altitude is 11cm.
Solution:
Page 1
Let A = area of the triangle
a = altitude of the triangle
b = base of the triangle
The equation: A = kba

Getting Better
Answer the given problems.
1. The weight of a rectangular block of metal (W) varies jointly as its length
(l), width (w) and thickness (t). If the weight of a 2 dm by 3 dm by 4 dm
block of aluminum is 18 kg, find the weight of a 16 dm by 10dm by 4 dm
block of aluminum.
2. The electrical resistance (R) of a wire varies directly as its length (L) and
inversely as the square of its diameter (D). If a wire 30 meters long and
0.75 mm in diameter has a resistance of 25 ohms, find the length of a
wire of the same material whose resistance and diameter are 30 ohms and
1.25 mm, respectively.

I Need to Remember
To solve problems involving variation, just remember the following steps:
✓ Read and analyze the problem.
✓ Make a list of representations for each variable used in the problem.
✓ Determine the equation of variation by using the first set of data in the
problem.
✓ Answer what is asked by using the derived equation of variation.
