Biographical Approach
Biographical approach is to understand why the author wrote what he or she wrote. Also,
to point out how biographical circumstances contributed to the creation of the written piece. It
was said that Samuel Johnson (1779) was the researched poet who had utilized truthful accounts
of their lives to their writings.
The Life Story of Leona Josefa Florentino and The Poem Nalpay a Namnama
Upon reading the life story of Leona Josefa Florentino and her poem entitled Nalpay a
Namnama; Blasted Hope; Naunsyaming Pagasa, I could say that her inspiration in writing her
poem was her own experience. Also, she might have written this poem when she was exiled. She
was shunned by her husband and son due to her feminist nature of writing.
The hope that she had was gone. She had lived a very short life which if not because of
illness I could associate the cause of her death to tremendous loneliness she felt. She was totally
broken hearted because despite of all the things she did for her family and for her countrymen to
raise women’s right and to eradicate gender discrimination what she received were lack of support
even from her own family and worst was an exile away from her loved ones.
The first two stanza of the poem expressed what she really desired to have, to be the one
who is loved. From both English and Tagalog translation of her poem, I could also infer that she
had given up because the latter part of it she thought of dying or better not to be born. The message
of the poem was clear. Her arranged marriage to her husband at the very young age of 14 was not
the “truly happy married life” and her care and love for her husband was requited which were
explicitly depicted in her poem.
