Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) : Assignment On: Inclining Experiment (Derivation and Condition)

The document discusses how to determine the metacentric height (GM) of a ship through an inclining experiment. [1] It explains that when a ship is heeled by an angle θ by moving a mass w a distance d, the GM can be calculated using the formula GM = Δ × tanθ / (w × d), where Δ is the displacement of the ship. [2] It also notes several points to consider for an accurate measurement of GM, such as conducting the experiment after construction is complete, in calm water, with all movable items removed, and accurately measuring factors like pendulum length and draft. [3] An accurate GM value is important as it forms the basis for subsequent stability calculations.

 Experimentally, how will you find out GM of a completed ship?
Define the formula.

Solution:

The metacentric height of the ship plays an important role in setting the
loading capacity and stability of the ship. Let’s consider a ship which
was in equilibrium is now inclined by an angle 𝜃.

Fig: Inclined by an angle

When a ship is heeled by an angle, the center of buoyancy is shifted
from B to B1. When a vertical line is drawn from B and B1, they
intersect at a point known as metacenter of the ship. The metacentric
height is the distance between the center of gravity and metacenter.

The initial metacentric height of the ship is determined by an inclining

experiment after the ship is completely built. This is a simple
experiment which is carried out on the completed ship to determine
the metacentric height and hence the height of the center of gravity of
the ship. If the height of the center of gravity of the empty ship is
known, it is possible to calculate its position for any given condition of
loading. The experiment is commenced with the ship upright.

A small mass ‘w’ is moved across the ship through a distance ‘d’. This
causes the centre of gravity to move from its original position G on the
centerline to G1.
𝐼𝑓 ∆ = 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝
𝑤 × 𝑑
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝐺𝐺1 =

The ship then heels to angle 𝜃. When the center of buoyancy moves
from B to B1 in the same vertical line as G1. But the vertical through B1
intersects the centerline at M, the transverse metacenter.

𝐺𝐺1 = 𝐺𝑀 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃
𝑤 × 𝑑
𝐺𝑀 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 =

𝑤 × 𝑑
𝐺𝑀 =
∆ × 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃
To determine the angle of heel, it is necessary to suspend a pendulum
from the underside of a hatch. The deflection ‘a’ of the pendulum may
be measured when the mass is moved across the deck
Thus if, l = length of pendulum.
a
𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 =
l
𝑤 × 𝑑 × 𝑙
𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐺𝑀 =
∆ × 𝑎

The height of the transverse metacenter above the keel may be found
from the metacentric diagram.

 What are the points to be considered to get accurate value of

GM?

Solution:

An inclining experiment is conducted to determine the GM of the ship.

It is essential that it is performed and calculated as accurate as possible
because the result will be the basis of all subsequent stability
calculations. The points that should be considered to get accurate value
of GM are given below:-

1. This experiment must be conducted only after the vessel is in

completion state of the construction or as nearly as possible to her final
state of construction.
2. The vessel should be in a sheltered environment floating freely and
away from the influence of wind, current, tide etc.
3. All movable items, including people that can be put aside should be
removed from the ship.
4. The ship must be in upright condition, however, if she is listed, the
list should not be greater than a half degree.
5. Draft and density of water are to be correctly noted. Measurements
of draft from draft marks on ship side should be made at several points
round the vessel.
6. All tanks in the ship must be emptied or pressed up tight to reduce
free surface effect.
7. Test weights are to be compact and of such configuration that their
center of gravity may be accurately determined.
8. The pendulum length ‘l’ is to be measured from its point of
suspension.
9. Two or three pendulum can be used for greater accuracy.
10. The pendulum weight is to be placed in a through filled with water
or oil to dampen the oscillation of the pendulum.
