CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study
One of the most overlooked features on computers today is the built-in ability to
automatically update software. Keeping your operating system up-to-date is vital for a
healthy computer in today's environment. Software manufactures are constantly fixing
software bugs, updating driver for new devises, and making improvements on the
software that you use every day. While this may not sound like it's that big of a deal - it
is. [1]
An operating system (OS) is a system software that manages computer
hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer
programs. Operating systems are found on many devices that contain a computer -
from cellular phones and video game consoles to web servers and supercomputers.
The dominant desktop operating system is Microsoft Windows due to its reliability and
functionality. And it is, just because of that, dominant. In other words, once a platform
becomes dominant, it tends to stay that way. It's inertia. With millions of applications
available for Windows, it makes sense to use Windows. And with everyone using
Windows, it makes sense to write new applications for Windows. It's self-perpetuating.
The greater the number of Windows computers in the world, the greater the inertia.
Windows 10 is a personal computer operating system developed and released
by Microsoft as part of their Windows NT family of operating systems. It is the first
version of Windows that receives ongoing feature updates. Windows 10 introduces what
Microsoft described as "universal apps"; expanding on Metro-style apps, these apps
can be designed to run across multiple Microsoft product families with nearly identical
code—including PCs, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, Xbox One, Surface
Hub and Mixed Reality.
Windows 10 is the newest operating system introduced by Microsoft and they
have announced that they will stop supporting Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on 2020
and 2023 respectively. Which means if you have any problem on your old operating
systems by that time, you will not get any help from Microsoft at all leaving your
computer vulnerable to threats. Not many people in the Philippines have enough
knowledge of optimizing their operating system because of the lack of knowledge, or
funds to have a better computer to run extensive tasks due to the demand of faster
computers in the market today. The aim of the researchers is to provide a fully
optimized windows 10 for users who only have low-end specifications for it to still be
functional and efficient.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The purpose of the study is to analyze
1.) Will the researchers’ method of optimizing Windows 10 be effective in
improving the computers' performance?
2.) Will the new User Interface be more accessible and user-friendly?
3.) Will users be satisfied with the optimized operating system?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This is study is invaluable to students, office workers, companies, and Microsoft
themselves because computers have integrated in our daily lives. The purpose of the
study is to help optimize the newest operating system into older computers which can
still be useful to people.
Students - Students nowadays tend to rely on computers and the internet when
it comes to school work. Yet, not all students have the privilege of having a good laptop
or computer. The study can be beneficial to them if they have Windows 10 and a low-
budget PC to help them in their academics faster.
Office workers - They are the main focus of the study. Computers have become
a quintessential part of the office environment. With that said, it is still within the
company's best self-interest to spend as little as they can while maintaining high
performance.
Companies - The study will be helpful to companies because it addresses most
people's complaints where their service is bad due to technical difficulties. With the
optimized operating system it can significantly boost the companies' performance and
help gain the trust of their customers back.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
This study aims to investigate how optimizing a windows 10 operating system
can benefit people with low-end computers and companies to have an edge in the
competitive world.
METHODOLOGY
In this part of the study. these are the things that the researchers did in order to
optimize Windows 10 on a low-end computer.
Start from a fresh install of Windows 10
Make sure it’s fully updated
Disable Telemetry by:
Changing the privacy settings in Windows’ Settings app
Disabling telemetry in the registry
Open a command prompt as Administrator, then type the following:
sc diagtrack start= disabled (the space after “start =” is a must)
Service changes – Hold the Windows Key + R, then type services.msc and
choose OK.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service – Automatic (Delayed Start) ->
Manual
Connected User Experiences and Telemetry – Automatic -> Disabled
Diagnostic Policy Service – Automatic -> Manual
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) – Manual (Triggered) -> Disabled
Windows Biometric Service – Automatic -> Manual
WLAN Autoconfig – Automatic -> Manual
Download and install the following:

Decimal “20”
Right-click -> New -> DWORD and name it “RoundRectRadius” -> set
it to Decimal “12”
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Using a Third-Party Tool called “ATTO Disk Benchmark” to measure the
performance of the computer on read and write speed on Windows 10 and Windows
9.5, and here are the results:
Table 1 (Windows 10)
Table 2 (Windows 9.5)
The Windows 9.5 version performs slightly worse on smaller file sizes
however, it seems to also have better performances on bigger file sizes.
Regardless, in both cases, the differences are not significant entirely, Therefore,
in terms of read and write speeds, modifying windows does not seem to increase
nor decrease performance at a noticeable level.
