Constructivist Theory in Teaching Science: Lesson 4 Activities

This document contains activities from a lesson plan on constructivist theory in teaching science. Activity 1 asks students to recall their best science class moment. One student describes performing experiments in groups which provided a remarkable learning experience. Activity 2 lists 5 principles of constructivist teaching including posing relevant problems and seeking student viewpoints. Activity 3 compares traditional and constructivist classrooms, noting features like student-developed questions and use of manipulatives in constructivist classrooms. Activity 4 has students match appropriate constructivist teaching strategies like discussion and hands-on activities to different science topics and competencies.

LESSON 4 ACTIVITIES
Constructivist Theory in Teaching Science

NAME: Sharwin B. Bordarais

BLOCK: A

Activity 1 My Best Science Class Moments

Recall the best moments you had in your science class when you were in
elementary. What were you doing? What was your lesson? What made it the best moment?

The time when I was in grade 11, when we were performing experiments group by group in
front of the class that is guided and facilitated by our teacher Mr. Ryan M. Bañaria. It was
such a remarkable experienced for me because we were able to share and showcase our
knowledge and capabilities in performing in that particular activity that we weren’t used to.
Pressures are there but at the same time we had fun with it and the most important thing is
we acquired knowledge from that specific learning experienced.

Activity 2 The Principles of Constructivist Teaching and Learning

What are the principles of constructivist theory in teaching science?

1.Posing problems of emerging relevance to learners

2.Structuring learning around primary concepts
3.Seeking and valuing students’ points-of-view
4 Adapting curriculum to address students’ suppositions
5.Assessing student learning in the context of teaching

Activity 3 The Traditional Classroom vs. The Constructivist Classroom

How does a constructivist classroom look like compared to a traditional classroom?

Characterize a constructivist classroom by completing the list of features in the
second column.

Traditional Classroom Constructivist Classroom

The quest for learner-developed questions

Adherence to fixed curriculum and relevant interest is considered of high
value

Textbooks and workbooks Primary sources and manipulative materials

The instructor gives and the Teachers facilitates students in constructing

students receives their own knowledge

Knowledge is deemed to be active and

Knowledge is inert evolves with the learner’s interactions with
knowledge
Through assessing learning products,
Assessment via paper-and-pen test observations and perspectives, as well as
exams. The process is as vital as the
outcomes

The instructor assumes authoritative Educators function’s evolves around the

role collaboration and mediation of learning.

Activity 4 The Constructivist Teaching Strategies

Try out your knowledge and understanding of constructivist teaching strategies

by selecting appropriate strategies that will complete the table of alignment
below. Make sure that the teaching strategies match the target topic and competencies.
