Business Analytics
Final Interim Report

Problem Statement:

To understand, analyse the historical sales data for Walmart Stores and predict the department-wise
sales for each store.

Problem Description:

Walmart is an American multinational retail Corporation that operates a chain of stores in the
United States. Walmart is suffering from a dual problem where the inventory is goes out of stock or
the inventory remains unproductive. A big part of the problem is trying to predict the sales for
Walmart Stores

Method:

Tool: Tableau, Python

Dataset: We would be using dataset provided by Walmart which is available on kaggle.com

We would be using Python to assess the 45 stores and departments of each store.

The steps involved in conducting the analysis using Python are as follows:

1. Dataset extraction following by importing dataset in CSV format in Python.

2. Cleaning and transforming the dataset in Python by removing redundant/duplicate data
filling missing values resolving inconsistencies and standardizing the data
3. Using various python libraries of python along with Tableau to visualize the data
4. Using insights obtained we would build a model to predict the sales of all departments.

Addressing the business Problem

We can use this dataset to forecast the inventory demands for Walmart. This dataset includes the
sales across 45 stores and the variations that occur during special events such as super bowl,
thanksgiving, charismas. This analysis can help improve the inventory stocks, reduce overstocking
and even increase customer satisfaction

1. Inventory Optimization: Using the trend in sales across the data of 45 stores, the inventory
stocks can be reduced or increased according to the forecasted demand. This can help
reduce the cost of operations. For example, in case of over stocking the excess inventory
goes to waste.
2. Seasonality: There are some spikes and dips in sales during special occasions. These
occasions include super bowl, thanksgiving, Christmas and some other. Using the data
available and the forecasted model, the inventory can be stockpiled in advance so that there
are no shortages across the stores.
3. Customer Satisfaction: The availability of the items during peak shopping seasons across the
stores will in turn increase the customer satisfaction levels.
