Assignment4-Edinburgh Tram System PrasadTamhane

The document summarizes the tasks required to complete the Edinburgh Tram System project. It includes: 1) A network analysis of the project tasks based on expected durations in appendices 1 and 2, identifying the critical path in red arrows. 2) A linked bar chart presenting the normal project program. 3) A calculation of the target duration of 106 days for project completion, allowing a 95% probability of on-time completion. 4) An analysis of how a resource constraint of only 2 excavators increases the project duration by 18 days and changes the critical path. 5) A crashing analysis to reduce the project duration back to the target of 106 days, identifying activities to crash for a

Q1: Complete the network analysis for the tram planning office project using the project logic diagram that is
provided in Appendix 1, based on the ‘Expected Durations’ for each task, which can be determined from the
task data that is forwarded in Appendix 2.

Q2: Produce Linked Bar-Chart that presents a summary of Normal Project Program.

Please refer the Assignment4_Worksheet_PrasadTamhane.xlsx for working.

Q3: To the nearest whole day calculate the target duration for the construction of the tram
planning office building, allowing for a 95% probability of on time completion. This is the
duration that will be agreed with the client for project handover, and will therefore become
the contractual obligation that must be met.
3

In order to calculated the target duration assuming 95% probability of on time completion –
standard nominal probabilities – z – chart is used. Using this chart value of ‘z’ is ascertained in
the following equation.

X −Mean
z=
S. D
The Mean is determined from Q1 – total duration of the Project
S.D. is determined using formula – σ2 = [(tp – to)/6]2

z is determined from Z-Chart.

From calculation, and rounding to the nearest round figure the Target Duration of the project
would be 106 Days.

Q4: The tasks ‘Install Drainage’ and ‘Install Piled Foundations’ both require the use of 2
Excavators. Upon completing the initial planning phase it has been determined that the
Subcontractor responsible for delivering these two tasks has only priced for, and only has
access to just 2 excavators for the duration of their involvement with the project. You must
now check the initial plan to determine whether this resource constraint will cause a

Please refer the Assignment4_Worksheet_PrasadTamhane.xlsx for working.

1. As both the tasks "Install drainage" and "Install piled foundations" have the same early start,
two excavators cannot be used for both activities simultaneously.
2. Therefore the early start for activity "Install Drainage" will be 25 days - After the completion of
Activity "Install piled foundation. we will have to complete one activity with the available
excavators i.e. "Install Pile Foundation" first before allocating the excavators for "Install
Drainage Activity. Consequetively, now the duration of the project increased by 18 days. The
new duration of the project is 119 days.
3. Also Due to this, now both Install Drainage and Install pile foundation both are on critical path
of the project. Overall critical path of the project is also changed
4. Revised Network Diagram is as below:

Q5: Crashing Requirement

Please refer the Assignment4_Worksheet_PrasadTamhane.xlsx for working

1. Due to subsequent delays in addition to less number of excavators, the total duration of the
project goes up to 123 Days. The committed project duration from Question 3 is 106 days. Due
to this dealy we are looking at £ 340,000 Panelty
2. To avoid the panelty, Activities on critical path is to be crashed. Since activity 2, 3 and 4 are
already completed we can't crash these activities. To be more cost effective we will crash
activities those are on critical path and with lowest cost of crashing.
3. Accordingly, we decided to carsh following activities:
a. Commissioning and Handover - Due to low cost of crashing £ 2000/day
b. Install Electricity Services - Second lowest cost of crashing for the activity which is on
critical path. Other activities on critical path cannot be crashed.

The cost of crashing is £ 158,000 Vs. Panelty of £ 340,000.
