Ways of managing deficiency diseases.

Deficiency diseases come about because of many factors.

These factors include an unhealthy diet, wrong cooking
methods, food storages, alcoholism, lack of breastfeeding,
problems with the digestive system and many other
problems. However, these deficiency diseases can be
managed and one can be restored back to good health. The
following suggestions can help a person with deficiency
problems.

• Sticking to a healthy diet:

A healthy diet makes provision for necessary micro
and macro nutrients that help in boosting the
immune system. The foods taken every day should
make up a balanced diet. A balanced diet
strengthens the immune system.

• Adequate rest:
Enough rest is good for the body and the immune
system. The body can repair itself and the damaged
immune system can also repair itself.

• Regular exercise:
improves functioning of the heart and muscles. one
can participate in swimming, cycling, long walks
and running. But it is good to get involved in
sporting activities like soccer, volleyball, baseball
and many others. The type of exercises may require
a doctor's recommendation.

• Eating variety of foods:

One must not eat the same kinds of food. This may
result in the lack of certain nutrients. It is
recommended that one includes foods such as
grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seafood, lean meat,
and dairy products in daily meal preparation. In
Zimbabwe foods like unpolished rice, sorghum
meal and fresh cow milk, flying insects, edible
termites and green vegetables are usually available,
especially in rural areas.
• Use of fortified food:

Nutrition nutrients can be added to certain foods

for the purpose of reducing the effect of
malnutrition. For example, milk can be fortified
with vitamin D, fruit juices can be fortified with
calcium end bread can be fortified with iron.
Fortifying increases the national value of the food.
Foods are usually fortified with micro nutrients.

• Nutrition education programs:

These help in passing information about good
methods of preparing food, hygiene practices and
nutritional value of different foods. This knowledge
enables families to plan for and prepare nutritious
food. In Zimbabwe health centers have a facility
where expecting mothers are taught about good
nutrition. Community workers are also trained to
teach others about good nutrition.

• Breast feeding:
Breast milk contains antibodies that fight diseases
and therefore reduce the risk of diseases in
children.
