IMAGO DEI: Reflection and Application

1. From the video on image dei that you have just watched, answer the questions: "How do we
human beings actually reflect/display the image and likeness of God?.

God created human beings in his image and likeness. Therefore, we are made to resemble God,
just like how He created Adam and Eve to bear His. One common way that describes how humans
reflect and display His image and likeness is through our dominion over the Earth. We have
stewardship and the power to rule over God’s creation so that we may tend to, care for, and use these
resources in the service of God and ourselves. Additionally, we can display our image of God through
our rationality, the capacity to make free choices, healthy relationships with others, and the ability to
develop ourselves to our best character. This likeness can also be portrayed mentally, socially, and
morally. Mentally, when we are able to primarily make choices and decide on things that benefit the
common good. An example of this is when we face a difficult situation but still choose to look at the
issue through God’s eyes with patience and understanding. Socially, humans are created not to make
us live in isolation but to live for ourselves, our fellowmen, and God. An example is when we take the
initiative to extend a helping hand, especially to those broken and oppressed, and foster relationships
with people we care for and love the most. Morally, when we make the reasonable, right choices by
listening to our conscience. Despite all of these, man still shows the effects of sin that Adam and Eve
chose while bearing the image of God. The only way we can redeem ourselves is when God purifies,
wholly sanctifies, and empowers us with the Holy spirit’s fullness.

2. If I believe in the Genesis account (the imago dei found in Genesis 1:26), what implications
does it have in my present life?

a. I have to be more patient and kind with myself because I’m still growing as a person. I also have
to love myself like how God loves me and let go of the negative and self-deprecating thoughts
because God sees and understands every pain, obstacle, and heartbreak I’ve been through.
b. I have to be kind and compassionate towards others and treat them the way I want to be treated. I
have to ask for forgiveness whenever I have wronged someone and forgive people when they ask
for it. I also have to build healthy relationships with my family, friends, and acquaintances.
c. I have to pray, talk and commune with God not only in times when I need his guidance. I have to
obey His commandments and show gratitude for everything He has done for me. I also have to
study God’s scriptures and spread His word to others.
