ACTIVITY 3

1. How would you interpret KOBIE Bryant as a basketball player?

In the field of basketball, the legendary KOBIE
Bryant is considered one of the most skilled
and the most recognized player of all time.
KOBIE Bryant is very hardworking and
persistent on and off the court. He really exerts
a lot of effort and put all the work to grow and
learn from his mistakes. He faced it head-on
and continued toward his goal. I also interpret
KOBIE Bryant as an inspiration because he
uses his fame to be able to inspire young
people. He did a lot of mentoring, and he was
able to share some advice to other aspiring
players as well. Lastly, I interpret him as having strong work ethic. He always
wants to be the best and he’ll do anything to remain on top and he is in constant
pursuit of basketball perfection.

2. What are the duties of referees?

 Check all game equipment (i.e., hoop, ball, background, floor)
 Check the pressure of the ball between 7.5 pounds and 8.5 pounds
 Check player’s uniforms and remove illegal equipment
 Checking team roster size and the active list
 Toss the ball in jump balls
 Assign possession of the ball on throw-ins
 Giving the ball to the free-throw shooter
 Calling all fouls and violations
 Signaling a dead ball by blowing his whistle
3. What are the rules of the game?

Rules for the offense

The basketball team on offense is the team with the

basketball. When a player has the basketball there
are certain rules they must follow:

1. The player must bounce, or dribble, the ball with one hand while moving both feet.
If, at any time, both hands touch the ball or the player stops dribbling, the player
must only move one foot. The foot that is stationary is called the pivot foot.
2. The basketball player can only take one turn at dribbling. In other words, once a
player has stopped dribbling, they cannot start another dribble. A player who starts
dribbling again is called for a double-dribbling violation and loses the basketball to
the other team. A player can only start another dribble after another player from
either team touches or gains control of the basketball. This is usually after a shot or
pass.
3. The ball must stay in bounds. If the offensive team losses the ball out of bounds the
other team gets control of the basketball
4. The players hand must be on top of the ball while dribbling. If they touch the bottom
of the basketball while dribbling and continue to dribble this is called carrying the
ball and the player will lose the ball to the other team.
5. Once the offensive team crosses half court, they may not go back into the
backcourt. This is called a backcourt violation. If the defensive team knocks the ball
into the backcourt, then the offensive team can recover the ball legally.

Defensive Rules

The team on defense is the team without the basketball.

1. The main rule for the defensive player is not to foul. A foul is described as gaining an
unfair advantage through physical contact. There is some interpretation that has to
be made by the referee, but, in general, the defensive player may not touch the
offensive player in a way that causes the offensive player to lose the ball or miss a
shot.

Rules for Everyone

1. Although the foul rule is described above as a defensive rule, it applies exactly the
same to all players on the court including offensive players.
2. Basketball players cannot kick the ball or hit it with their fist.
3. No player can touch the basketball while it is traveling downward towards the basket
or if it is on the rim. This is called goaltending. (Touching the ball on the rim is legal
in some games). Every player on the court is subject to the same rules regardless of
the position they play. The positions in basketball are just for team basketball
strategy and there are no positions in the rules.

4. What are the types of violation?

Time Violations

 24-second Shot Clock – if the shot clock runs out and the ball hasn’t hit the rim,
then it results in a turnover.
 8-second Back Court – this rule makes the offense advance the ball beyond
half court in a certain amount of time. This advances the game and condenses it
into the frontcourt for the majority of a typical possession
 5-second Held Ball – an inbound pass must occur before the conclusion of five
seconds. Time starts after the passer is given the ball and the referee sounds a
whistle
 3-second Paint – this rule prevents from “camping” and keeping an
advantageous position in the paint

Dribbling Violations

 Traveling - occurs when a player takes too many steps without dribbling
 Walking – occurs when a player illegally moves with possession of the ball
 Palming – is a violation that results in a turnover when called on a ball handler.
 Carrying – when a player “carries” the ball or allow his hand to go underneath
the ball while dribbling
 Double Dribbling – is a personal violation given to a player that either uses two
hands to dribble, or stops with the ball and starts dribbling again

Shooting / Defending Violations

 Charging – is when the attacking player with the basketball charges into and
through their defender
 Blocking – is a foul assessed to a defensive player who is not properly
positioned and makes contact with an offensive player to stop their movement
 Goaltending – it is illegal to touch the ball when it has a chance of going in the
basket

DIFFERENT KINDS OF VIOLATIONS

1. Out of Bounds – being the last player to touch the ball before it goes out of
bounds
2. Double Dribble – dribbling the ball before picking it up and dribbling again
3. Carry – scooping the ball to carry it while dribbling
4. Five-second violation – failure to inbound the ball five seconds after receiving it
5. Illegal Throw-in – stepping over the line while throwing-in the ball, moving
before throwing it in, or throwing it out of bounds
6. Kicked Ball – kicking the ball, intentionally or unintentionally
7. Striking the Ball with a fist
8. Goaltending – interfering with a shot when it is on a downward arc into the
basket
9. Jump Ball Violation – an infraction before the ball is tipped
10. Offensive Three-seconds – staying in the key for three seconds or more while
on offense
11. Defensive Three-seconds – a defensive player staying in the lane for longer
than three seconds without guarding anyone
12. Eight-second violation – the offense fails to cross half court eight seconds after
inbounding the ball
13. Over-and-back violation- the offense returning the ball from the front court to
the back court without the other team touching it
14. Swinging of elbows
15. Entering basket from below – a ball that goes through the net before the rim
16. Illegal Assist – grabbing the rim, net, or backboard to give yourself an
advantage
17. Traveling – taking more than two steps without dribbling the ball
18. Illegal Screen – a screen set out-of-bounds
19. Leaving the court
20. Held Ball Violation – offense holds the ball without doing anything for five
seconds
21. Shot Clock Violation – failure to get a shot off before the shot clock expires

5. Common Roles of Officials

At any level of basketball, the referees have some responsibilities that take place before
the game begins. They must make sure every uniform is worn correctly and no
violations on this front are visible. Also, they will inspect the court, the hoops, and game
ball to make sure that it is sufficient and ready to be played with and on. The referees
usually meet with the team captains to go over any specific items they need to discuss
or just general preparations for the game too.

Referees

Referees are the main officials of the game. They are the ones who are actually
responsible for enforcing rules and regulations and calling fouls and violations. The
number of referees officiating a game depends on the level of play.

Umpire
(2nd Referee and 3rd Referee). The umpires conduct the game according to the rules.
They can also exchange position with the referee and call fouls.

Scorers

Scorers play supportive role in the game of the basketball. There can be one or two
scorers in a game depending on the rules of the league and their job is to write down
the stats relevant to the game. They keep a running summary of points scored, notify
field goals and free throws made and missed. They also record the fouls called on each
player and informs a referee if sixth fouls is called against a player (to eject him from
game). Also notes the timeouts and let the referee knows if all timeouts have been used
up by a team.

Timers / Timekeeper

Timer assists referee in recording time. Generally, two timers are appointed by the
league. One is official timer who operates the game clock and the other is shot clock
operator who operates 24 second clock. Official timer alerts referee when each half is
going to start and stops the clock when any kind of interruption occurs during a game
(fouls, out of bounds, timeouts etc) while shot clock timer informs referee when a player
takes 24 or more seconds to shoot a ball (keeping the ball in possession for 24 seconds
or more is a violation).

24-Second Operator

A 24-second operator is responsible for operating the 24-second device and then call
the 24-second violation by sounding signal

6. Benefits of Playing Basketball

Health benefits of basketball

Basketball involves a lot of starting and stopping. While not renowned as an aerobic
sport, it is still a great workout that can help you:

 burn calories (an hour of basketball can burn 630–750 calories)

 build endurance
 improve balance and coordination
 develop concentration and self-discipline
 build up muscle.

Other benefits of basketball

As well as being a great way to stay fit, basketball can also:

 help you to make new friends and see them regularly teach you about being a
good team player
 be played by people of all ages and all abilities
 be played all year round because it’s usually an indoor sport
 be a fun game that kids of all levels and ages can enjoy
 be practiced alone – all you need is a ball and a hoop (and you can find a hoop in
most local parks and school grounds)
 be played and enjoyed with as few as two people (although official games require
10 players).

7. What I most appreciate in today’s discussion

What I appreciate in today’s discussion is all about how basketball is played, its
rules and regulations, and the different roles of officials. I learned that there are certain
rules that must be followed in order to play basketball well. It is important to be
knowledgeable with the rules because it will help us to play the game fair and square. I
also appreciate how basketball can benefit us not just in our health but also our social
life. I appreciate basketball more after all the discussions and I am hoping to be able to
hone my skills in this sport because it does not only give physical benefits but also
mental, emotional, and social benefits.
