The Principle of Social Philosophy as called the “mother of philosophy”

Social Philosophy transcends various conclusions (data) provided by other branches of

knowledge. It is the study of the most fundamental and general laws of social behavior and
social change (most important kaya tinawag na mother of philosophy)

Main Idea:

Social Philosophy studies the most fundamental laws which influence social cohesion, social
progress, social change and social disintegration. It seeks insight into the causes of social
crimes, juvenile delinquency, child labor, honor killing, gender differentiation, injustice, and
inequality. It tries to find out the root causes of social pathology and suggests the remedies for
it. Social Philosophy seeks to discover and restore the social bonds that hold the mankind
together. Social Philosophy reflects upon the impact of science and technology on human
society and gives a comprehensive philosophy of civilization. It incorporates the conclusions of
other sciences and gives their philosophical interpretation. Social Philosophy has axiological
point of view. It defines the social values such as common good, happiness, peace, security,
justice, freedom, excellence/beauty, punctuality and discipline. We live in globalizing world and
society is becoming more and more inclusive. Social Philosophy is concerned with the problems
of marginalization of certain sections of society all over the world on the basis of birth,
education, skills, gender, age, profession and possessions. The traditional social institutions
such as religion, family and marriage are undergoing radical changes. The social values need
modification or redefinition to enhance the progress of individuals and groups. Social
Philosophy tries to meet all the requirements to maintain social solidarity. It views the entire
mankind as one family which has a unique kind of fraternity and commitment. The unity and the
wholeness of such a family aim at the realization of love, compassion and justice for its
members. The scope of Social Philosophy includes everything which has human and social
significance.
Why is Philosophy the mother of all knowledge?
Philosophy is often regarded as the mother of all the sciences, because it was the pre-Socratic
philosophers who first tried to study the nature of the world. They contributed a lot to the
schools of ancient Greece that helped evolve science back then. Some of their contributions
are Empedocles‘elements (fire, air, earth, water, and ether), Democritus‘ Atom theory, Thales‘
studies of space, substances, and the origin of everything (Cosmology).
After them came the ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle, who established Physics (dynamics),
Zoology, and Logic. It is said that Avicenna (Ibn Sēna) was heavily influenced by Aristotle, who
then influenced Ockham who influenced Newton; hence, the whole of modern physics.
Ancient and midieval philosophers didn’t stop at science, they mainly concentrated on
conscious, theology, knowledge itself, politics, ethics, and metaphysics. Each of these fields
evolved into its own branch of knowledge that is still being studied today in schools and
universities.

We looked previously at how philosophers started all the sciences. But how is it the mother of
knowledge as one that contains them, and one that they all return to it?

Philosophy studies everything, from physics to mathematics, to ethics, law and politics, to
psychology, sociology, and language. That is, aside from studying subjects that are specially
philosophical, like how knowledge is obtained, what is knowledge, the existence of knowledge,
is it possible to know, etc…

More importantly, philosophy studies perception  which puts all other forms of knowledge on
the edge, because every science strongly depends on it.

I believe that philosophy is the mother of all knowledge because it was the starting point of most
of the sciences that we study today, and if it wasn’t for those ancient philosophers (and a lot of
modern philosophers) then nothing would’ve been as it is today. Also, because philosophy, in
my humble opinion, is the most important science, because there is no field of knowledge that
truly discusses who we are from our points of view, and I see that as something that is truly
essential; we are everything to ourselves, and we need to know what we are to ourselves in
order to understand ourselves.

Philosophy, in constant repetition, opens new subjects to the sciences to discuss, and without
philosophy or philosophical methods, we cannot reach new information. We can define from
that philosophy as the method we use to acquire new formulated ideas. Experimentation done
after is just to prove what is written on paper, and that is the best way to come up with new
information. The theoretical way is the safest and wisest choice.
