RRB NTPC - Physics - Magnetism-English

This document discusses magnetism and the properties of magnets. It defines magnetism as the force of attraction or repulsion caused by the movement of charged particles. It then lists the key properties of magnets, including that magnets attract iron, cobalt, and nickel; have stronger force at their poles; and that like poles repel and opposite poles attract. It also describes magnetic field lines and their characteristics, such as starting at the north pole and ending at the south pole.

MAGNETISM
Magnetism is the force of attraction or repulsion cause by the movement of charged
particles; It is not by static charge. It is caused by the movement of charge.
PROPERTIES OF MAGNET
1. Magnets attract objects of iron, cobalt and nickel.

’s
     2. The force of attraction of a magnet is greater at its poles than in the middle.
3. Like poles of two magnets repel each other.
     4. Opposite poles of two magnets attracts each other.

ar
5. If a bar magnet is suspended by a thread and if it is free to rotate, its South Pole will
move towards the North Pole of the earth and vice versa.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MAGNETIC LINES OF FORCE
1. Magnetic lines of force start from the North Pole and end at the South Pole.
2. They are continuos through the body of magnet
dh
     3. Magnetic lines of force can pass through iron more easily than air.

E
4. Two magnetic lines of force can not intersect each other.
     5. They tend to contract longitudinally.
     6. They tend to expand laterally.
Natural magnet is oxide of iron.
Permanent magnets are made by the ALNICO, i.e., Aluminum, Nickel, Cobalt.

Magnetic Poles: A region on a magnet which produces magnetic forces

The poles of a suspended magnet will align themselves to the poles of the Earth
C
Fundamental Rule: Like poles repel; opposite poles attract
Magnetic poles behave similarly to electric charges
EXCEPT:
Sr

Electric charges can be isolated

Magnetic poles cannot
Magnetic Field: The space around a magnet in which a magnetic force is exerted
The shape of a magnetic field is revealed by magnetic field lines
Directed away from north poles and toward south poles
C
The strength of magnetic fields are measured in units of Tesla (T)
