Aim: - Experimental location of centre of gravity of plane plates of different shapes with uniform
thickness.
Apparatus: - Plane plates of different geometrical shapes with uniform thickness, hook, string, plumb
bob, pencil, foot rule etc.
Theory: - Centre of gravity (C.G.) is an imaginary point in a solid body at which whole weight of the body
is assumed to be concentrated.
In the same way, centroid is the point in the area of a lamina at which whole area of lamina is supposed to
be concentrated or balanced. Position of C.G.of a lamina/body depends on it shape. Generally for regular
shaped bodies/lamina C.G. is the intersection of its diagonals. If a body is freely suspended from a
particular point, its C.G. always lies along plumb line which is passing through point of suspension.
Procedure:-
i) Take a rectangular plate.
ii) Drive wire nails at each corner to facilitate hanging of plate.
iii) Attach string at first corner say A and suspend the plate freely as shown in figure.
iv) Attach plumb bob to the stand from which plate is suspended. Length of string attached to
plumb bob should be more than the height of plate such that plumb bob hangs freely below the
plate. Also see that plumb line always passes from point of suspension of the plate.
v) Draw projection of string of plumb bob on the plate i.e. AA1.
vi) Repeat the procedure from step iii to v by hanging the same plate at corner B, C and D and draw
projection of strings on plate i.e. BB1, CC1, and DD1 respectively.
vii) Mark the common point of intersection of AA1, BB1, CC1 and DD1.This point of intersection is
centroid or C.G.
viii) Measure distance of centroid from bottom and left side, and verify the same by analytical
method.
ix) Repeat the procedure from step i to viii for plates of different geometrical shape.
x) Record the observations in observation table.

Conclusion: - Position of centre of gravity of given plates of uniform thickness by experimental method
and analytical method are equal/ nearly equal/ not equal.
