Murram roads

Grading and gravell1ng of murram roads within the countv of I asn Gishu This work was

ceculed as statcd below

Construction plants and equipment used and their uses on site

LNcavator- this was majorly used to excavate murram from the approved site where

good mumam ies beneath the ground Mostly one per site

Grader this was used to grade the road before muram is dumped It also opened
drainages alongside the roads to be gravelled After dumping of murram it is also the

work of the grader to level to murram to the required standard sually one per site

Tuck this were used transport murram to the site Other trucks had water tanks for

sprinkling water on the levelled murram for maximum compaction

Roller (10tonne) this is the compacter and this ends the work of gravellinga road

Process of road gravelling.

Soil test is performed on soil excavated from the site where murram is likely to be

Distance between the place where murram 1s excavated from and the site of dumping

done using the grader This is to remove
Grading the required distance of the road is

vegetation and make the road level for unform depth of murram
Dumpng of murram by the trucks follows Murram is dumped at requred intervals

Levelling of muram s the next step This is done using the grader
Water is then sprinkled for max1mum soil compaction
Roller then passes over levelled murram and compacts the soil until a smoother

surtace of the road is obtamed

I was also introduced to machines and maintenance of vanous plants at county vard
CHAPTER FIVE
EVALUATION OF THE ATTACHMENT PERIOD
5.1
SUCCESS OF THE ATTACHMENT
achment was successful smce the assigned duties matched with the course of civi

engineerng and really made about 90% of my objectives

P'articipating in the construction of roads, grading and gravelling of roads was really the main

partI really enjoyed having known different types of construction plants and equpment

was able to interact with senior engineers ofthe county who trained me on what a civil

engineer Is entitled to

Concreting was als0 another part I learnt practically and how concrete is placed This was

majorly done on the construction of manholes within the routes of optic fibre and the
construction of box culverts

Simple repair and maintenance of machines was another part that made my attachment
successful I was also able to operate certain machines which included the excavator, roller
and the grader

5.2 FAILURE OF THE ATTACHMENT

Having participated much on field work. I was unable to execute the office work which I was
so eager to learn on certain operations done n the office

I did much less work on soil test since I participated more on field work and do wish to meet

my objectives the next time on my attachment

5.3 CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED DURING ATTACHMENT

T h e distance between my res1dence and the site of work was much far and one needed
to incur more costs daily due to fare to place of work and back

Assigned supervisor would have more than one site to participate in and this

prolonged the time one would meet the supervisor for inquiries and solving certan

problems encountered
Allowances were not paid and this would also make one to go the all day without

eaing anything durmg the day This made the work at thecounty more difticul

Restriction to access various sections within the department was another challenge

and this h1ndered the execrution of work maximally
