JOINT PREPARATION Joint surface must be clean, dry, free of dust, grease, curing compounds, etc.
New concrete joints must be dry and at least 3 weeks old. In case of old joints,
traces of previous sealant and other contaminants should be removed by
mechanical means to ensure a clean surface.
Backup Material : A bond breaking backing rod SealXtra Backer Rod shall be
inserted into all movement joints to avoid a three sided adhesion. Use of a
backing rod will ensure proper joint depth and superior support to the sealant.
The diameter of the backing rod should be at least 20% larger but not greater
than 33% of the joint width. Generally the joint depth should be equal to or half of
its joint width W:D = 2:1 or 1:1 and for trafficable joints W:D = 1:1. Joint
dimensions should be designed as per BS 6093 to utilise full advantage of 25%
movement accommodation factor of the sealant. Weak joint edges, should be
strengthened by dressing with epoxy mortar maintaining joint size proportions.
PRIMING Joint surfaces should be primed with SealXtra Primer before application of
sealant. Joints must be completely dry before applying the primer. Brush apply
primer only to vertical surfaces of joint. Excessive application & puddling of primer
should be avoided.
Use ResiGard Primer WB in case one side is concrete and other is asphalt /
bituminous surface.
MIXING Add entire quantity of Part B to Part A and mix thoroughly using slow speed drill
with paddle. Avoid air entrapment during mixing. Mix until homogeneous consistency
and uniform colour is obtained.
APPLICATION Pour the mixed SealXtra PU FR into the prepared joint in a continuous operation.
Agitate the pored sealant to allow entrapped air to escape. While applying the
sealant, avoid air entrapment. Ensure that sealant adheres to parallel sides of
joint and not to the base, avoiding three point contact. Use a concave profile tool
to finish the sealant before the skin forms. Maintain a recess of 2 mm - 5mm from
top joint surface. Once mixed, use the entire content in a single application.
Finishing : Once the sealant has been installed, a suitable rounded tool soaked in
a detergent water solution can be used to achieve a smooth hour glass profile.
CURING Full Cure: 7 days
Nominal traffic after 24 hours at 250C and 50% relative humidity.
NOTE Do not apply sealant at temperatures below 50C. Special measures are required
where sealant is expected to come in contact with asphalt / bituminous surfaces.
