There are 5 areas of child growth and development:

These areas represent all the qualities of a human-being. It is referred to the holistic
development of a child. (Whole child development)

➢ The physical area has to do with the body and the functioning of the body.
➢ The concept includes genetic aspects of the gender, blood type, eye colour, and
other physical characteristics.
➢ Concerns the physical appearance and physical abilities and development
possibilities.
➢ Includes physical limits and weakness.

Our bodies are created to be active. Through movement, a child can explore the
surroundings. Aspects such as balance and coordination are important for crawling, walking,
climbing and playing.

Through the 5 senses children get information about the environment.

A child with physical disabilities might find it challenging to interact with his/her
surroundings.

The perception of one’s body and physical abilities has an impact on how you learn.

A healthy body = A healthy development

Physical development can be hindered if one is inactive, obese, malnutrition and has an
illness.

Physical aspects can be barriers to normal development.
