Threading of

Threading of over lock machine
Abstract
In this experiment we have to learn about the threading of the over lock machine. The
over lock machine is also known as the serging machine. That is used for the securing the edges
of the fabric. The over lock stich uses the four thread cones holders. The bobbin don’t uses in the
over lock machine. The two threads are for the looper and the two threads are for the needle. The
loopers forms the loops and the needles joins these loops and two horizontal guide and the two
vertical guides use to guide the yarn. The pin rod assembly guides the thread to the machine
parts. Tensioner assembly is used to give the tension to the thread. The two thread tensioners are
for the looper and the two thread tensioners are for the needle. The oil is placed in the oil tank
and the oil gauge is used to check the level to check the level of the oil in the machine parts. The
presser foot bar spring regulator assembly is use to increase or decrease the presser on the foot
bar. The presser foot arm is used for the movement of the presser foot. The needle is attached
with the needle clamp. The hand lever and the foot lifter is used for the permanent lifting or the
temporary lifting of the presser foot respectively. Cloth plate holds the cloth during the over
locking. The pair of the scissors are present that are used to cut the fabric from the end. These
was the main parts of the over lock machine and in this experiment we will study threading of
overlock machine through all these parts.
Introduction
An overlock sewing machine, or serger as it is commonly known, can trim, stitch, and overcast
seams as they sew. They can also be used for applications such as inserting a zipper and creating
beautiful decorations with certain stitches. They sew faster than conventional sewing machines at
up to 1,700 stitches per minute. Because of these features, an overlock machine can save time
and give a professional appearance to constructed items.
The overlock machine can be used to sew a wide variety of items—from placemats and napkins
to sportswear and draperies. Sewing items like a T-shirt or jogging outfit can be done in minutes,
and the seams of the finished products will look like those in store-bought clothing.
The overlock can also be used to finish the edges of seams. Decorative effects can be achieved
by using special threads in the loopers. Threads, such as metallics, silks, and perle cotton, can be
used to sew seams or to finish garment edges. For special effects, fine knitting yarn, buttonhole
twist, crochet thread, and even narrow ribbon can be used.
Overlock sewing machines are specialized, but they do not replace the conventional sewing
machine. Overlocks form interlocking stitches using one or two needles and one or two loopers.
The overlock stitch is more like crochet or knitting than the stitch of a conventional machine.
Loopers replace the traditional bobbin and interlock threads together.
Seam edges are trimmed by blades located just in front of the needle(s). In some models, the
upper knife can be rotated up to disengage the cutting action. In other models, one blade must be
removed when trimming is not desired.

Procedure / Threading
The machine which we are used to perform this practice has:
Needle
Upper looper
Lower looper
Step 1: Open the machine
There are several helpful threading tools stored in the looper cover door. You can find
your tweezers, screw driver.
Step 2: Place thread into pre-tension guide at the top of the machine
The first guide for all the threads is the pre-tension guide at the top of the machine.
Simply floss the thread into the guide and it will ensure that the thread will flow off
of the spool into the machine perfectly.
Step 3: Lay thread into tension disc
Next you will lay the thread into the tension disk. The presser foot is raised so the
disk is open, making it easy to get the thread into the tension disk. If you have ever
had a machine that required you to catch the tension disk by pulling thread around the
knob connecting with a wire, you will definitely understand how easy this machine is.
Step 4: Place thread into all guides
After tension disc thread is passed through horizontal guide and then through vertical
guide. Now you will follow the thread chart and place the thread into all the guides.
Step 5: Upper looper threading
After passing through all guides now pass the thread through upper looper lever or
hole.
Step 6: Lower Looper Threading
The lower looper has a thread guide that is underneath the stitch plate. To reach this
guide there is a helpful lower looper threader lever. Press it down and the guide will
move out from under the stitch plate. Place the thread into the guide and pull the lever
up or turn the hand wheel and the guide will go back into place.
Step 7: Use tweezers to thread the loopers
Tweezers are extremely helpful for threading the looper eye, as well as getting the
thread into all the guides.
Step 8: Thread the needles
Now you are ready to thread the needles. Depending on your stitch set-up you may
use only the left or right needle or both needles for 4-thread overlock. First take the
thread and pass through the guide and take up lever and then passed through the
needle eye.
Discussion
The inside of the machine is open and easy to access. Behind the looper door, inside the
machine, you will find a built-in threading chart. Perfect in case you don’t have your user manual
handy. Notice the upper and lower looper follow a similar thread path and the thread just snaps
into place, no more little corkscrew wires or covered thread guides. Each machine comes with a
Quick Reference Card that gives threading tips and all the stitch settings for the sixteen stitches
the machine makes. The inside of the machine is open and easy to access. Behind the looper

Conclusion
From this practical we came to know about the threading of the overlock machine. We observe
that there were two needles and two loopers are used in this machine this is the basic difference
among lockstitch machine and overlock machine. By performing this experiment we achieve our
objective of this lab. Threading of overlock machine is successfully done under the instruction of
lab incharge.
