CMCR : Contracted Maximum Continuous Rating, i.e. nominal power (100% output ) at nominal
engine speed (100%rpm)
Engine output can be obtained by the following two methods, of which 1st method,"Method by
torque coefficient-load indicator relation graph" of item 1 should be recorded as genuine and
2nd method,"Method by turbocharger speed"of item 2 as supplemental to the 1st method:
b)It should be noted that, in case of using the correction coefficient of load indicator
based on propeller margin, it is a major premise for propeller margin in an actual ship
to become same as originally planned in design of hull and propeller side.
(4)For a concrete example for finding engine output, refer to the following description.
(5)Attention must be paid to the following in carrying out output calculation using the load
indicator (torque factor) :
a)In the method of output calculation by load indicator, accuracy in measurement of the
load indicator is very important. In actual operation, value of the load indicator
sometimes fluctuates to an extent of ±0.05, and also the way of reading the indicator
differs by persons, thus causing a possibility of error to the extent of ±0.05.
b)For example, if one makes an error in reading the load indicator by 0.1, about 2% error
will be produced in output and fuel consumption.
c)Since the previously mentioned correction of atmospheric temperature and propeller
margin is mostly a collection of about 0.05 by the load of the load indicator, it is
necessary to pay full attention to the correct measurement of the load indicator.

(3) Carefully determine the feeding rate because it is largely affected by the type of using fuel oil and
cylinder oil.
(4) It is desirable to use a low alkaline cylinder oil at the time that ship sails maiden voyage with
operation of diesel oil.
The alkalinity of the oil is indicated by its Total Base Number (TBN, unit : mgKOH/g).
(5) In case where the piston ring or cylinder liner are renewed, a somewhat excess amount
of lubricating oil is to be fed until their surface become faced up.
(6) Adjust the final feeding rate according to the condition of the piston rings and cylinder liners.
(7) Raise the feeding rate at slow speed operation (Refer to 035-01).
When the adjusting knob is "A" position at each graduation, each graduation coincides on
the upper surface of lubricator’s body. If the position "A" is changed to "C" or "D" at the
same graduation, pay attention to prevent mistakes as the graduation cannot be seen on
the upper surface of the lubricator’s body, (If the position "3A" is changed to "3B", the
graduation of "3" is under the upper surface of the lubricator body.
An applied example for "Adjusting diagram for feed rate"(Fig.1-1) and "Calculating chart for P1
conversion oil feed rate"(Fig.2-1) of 053-03-3/6,-4/6 is mentioned as follows.
Although approximate values can be got by using these diagrams, each value of those should be calculated
by measuring cylinder oil consumption actually for all practical purposes. (Refer to 053-02)
The following example shows a case where engine output (at 100% load) is 6250 kW
( 8498 PS ) × 118 rpm and P1 coversion oil feed rate is 1.90 g/kWh ( 1.40 g/PSh)
1. Give an example P1 conversion oil feed rate of this ship qP1 = 1.90 g/kWh
(Point "A" in Fig.2-1)
( 1.40 g/PSh)
2. As an example, assume that the main engine is operated at 85 % load, that is, engine output is
5313 kW ( 7223 PS ) (Point "B" in Fig.2-1)
3. 100% nominal output and engine speed of this ship are 6250 kW ( 8498 PS) and
Ne(CMCR) = 118 rpm, and the nominal output and engine speed at the maximum output (point P1)
are 7470 kW ( 10156 PS) and Ne (P1) = 130 rpm.
Ne(CMCR)
Consequently, the derating coefficient KN of this engine is ×100= 90.8 %
Ne(P1)
(Indicated by "▲"on the KN scale in Fig.2-1)
From the calculation chart in Fig.2-1, draw the line from B to A,and extend it to the line T. Draw the
line from the intersection point on T to KN scale "▲" , the point C is scale of actual oil feed rate.
Therefore, it follows that the actual oil feed rate is
qA = 2.33 g/kWh ( 1.71 g/PSh) (Point "C" in Fig.2-1).
4. From the intersection (Point "G" in Fig.1-1) of upper actual oil feed rate qA= 2.33 g/kWh
( 1.71 g/PSh), and engine output 5313 kW ( 7223 PS), the actual lubrication amount
Q = 326.9 /day (Point "H" in Fig.1-1) are taken.
5. If the engine speed at this time is 111.8 rpm (Point "I" in Fig.1-1).
6. The oil amount adjustment setting for the cylinder lubricator is as follows.
The oil amount adjust knob position is 5 in adjusting handle position 5C .
The following example shows a case where engine output (at 100% load) is 6250 kW
( 8498 PS) × 118 rpm and actual measured feed oil quantity is 255 /day.
1. If the actually measured lubrication amount is Q = 255 /day, ship's engine output is
5000 kW ( 6798 PS) at 80 % load and specific gravity of cylinder oil γ = 0.91 ,
255 × 1000 × 0.91
actual oil feed rate qA= = 1.93 g/kWh( 1.42 g/PSh)
24 × 5000
is obtained from formula-(1). (Refer to 053-02-6/8)
2. 100% nominal output and engine speed of this ship are 6250 kW ( 8498 PS) and
Ne(CMCR)= 118 rpm, and the nominal output and engine speed at the maximum output (point P1)
are 7470 kW ( 10156 PS) and Ne(P1)= 130 rpm.
Ne(CMCR)
Consequently, the derating coefficient KN is ×100= 90.8 %
Ne(P1)
3. From derating coefficient KN= 90.8 % and qA= 1.93 g/kWh( 1.42 g/PSh) (Point "D")
in Fig.2-1, determine point "P" on the "T" line.
4. By connecting point "P" and engine output 80 % load, it is found that the P1 conversion oil feed
rate qP1= 1.51 g/kWh( 1.11 g/PSh) (Point "E" in Fig.2-1)
5. Consequently, the actual lubrication rate qA= 1.93 g/kWh( 1.42 g/PSh) at 80 %
load in this engine corresponds to qP1= 1.51 g/kWh( 1.11 g/PSh) in the P1 conversion
lubrication rate.

ITEM
There are several scavenging valves inside the scavenging air trunk.
The scavenging valve is a flap valve made of steel plate, consists of the plate(1),
bearings (2), shaft steel (3), and the others.
The scavenging valve (plate) is opened and closed automatically by air pressure
difference between the 1st chamber and the 2nd chamber.
During engine operation, the scavenging air compressed and cooled flows from the
1st chamber of scavenging air trunk into the 2nd chamber and is prevented from
reversed flow with the valves.
Before entering scavenging air trunk inside, open all manhole covers on the
upper face of the trunk and discharge combustion gas, etc. in the trunk by
compulsion.

The piston consists of the special forged steel piston head ( 1 ) ,piston head inner piece
( 2 )and piston skirt ( 4 ) attached to the piston rod flange bottom surface.
Eight stud bolts ( 8 ) are provided at the under side of the piston head to securely fix
the piston head ( 1 ) to the piston rod ( 3 ).
Four piston rings ( 5 ) and ( 6 ) are in the piston - ring grooves in the side of piston
head ensure gastight interface between the piston head and cylinder liner inner surface.
The top of piston head, cylinder cover, and cylinder liner together constitute
a combustion chamber.
The inner piece is securely fixed to the piston head ( 1 ) by four bolts ( 7 ), and
the space between the piston head ( 1 ) and inner piece ( 2 ) serves as a cooling-oil
chamber.
Cooling oil is supplied to the cooling-oil chamber by way of inner pipe ( 9 ) built in
the piston rod to cool cylinder head inner surface. The cooling-oil is discharged through
the space between the piston rod inner pipe ( 9 ) and piston rod ( 3 ).
The piston rod is made of forged steel and has a square flat at its lower end, which is
joined to the crosshead pin by four stud bolts.
Since the piston rod ( 3 ) shuttles between the scavenging-air chamber of the
cylinder jacket and crankcase, a piston-rod stuffing box is provided in way
of the penetration in the cylinder jacket.
For the main bolt tightening, refer to the section for
the tightening values of main bolts of the maintenance manual ( 0070-01 ).
For the clearance of each part, refer to the section for
the clearance of main parts of the maintenance manual ( 0060-03 ).
