UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE
What is a Universal Testing Machine?
Universal Testing Machine (UTM) is named as such because it is a great multi-purpose
instrument that can perform many different varieties of tests on an equally diverse range of
materials, components, and structures.
Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
What is the main function of the UTM?
The main function of UTM is to test the mechanical properties of materials such as:
1. Tensile Test - measures how strong it is (tensile strength) how stretchy it is (elongation), and
how stiff it is (tensile modulus)
2. Compression Test - The exact opposite of a tensile test.
- where you compress an object until a certain load or distance has been
reached or the product breaks
3. Adhesion Tests (Peel test) - Similar to a tensile test
- you pull apart two materials that have been bonded together
4. Bending Test - a compression test where you support a length of material by spanning it
across two supports on each end

Parts and Functions of Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND TESTING DATE SUBMITTED: JAN. 21, 2020
BSCE 2A ASSIGNMENT NO.: 1
Parts Function
1 Upper Crosshead o The topmost part of the UTM
o It is fixed
2 Upper Grip o Used to grip the upper end of the sample
3 Screw o Used to adjust the position of the lower crosshead
4 Lower Grip o Used to grip the lower end of the sample
o Together with the lower crosshead, it moves
downward during tensile and peel/adhesive test
5 Column o Supports the test frame
6 Lower Crosshead o Lower head of the UTM and is one of the important
parts
o Has upward and downward movement
7 Press Plate/Compression Plate o It is where compression and bending tests take
place
8 Working Table o Put the compression and bending test fixtures
9 Cylinder o Can be seen when the metal sheet is removed
o Test loading system
10 Metal Sheet o Covers the internal parts of the UTM
11 Baseplate o Supports the whole UTM
12 Grip Control System o Controls the upper and lower grips
13 Control Processing Unit o Brain of the computer where most calculations
(CPU) take place
14 Computer Monitor o Output device that displays information
15 Printer o Used to print the results of the test conducted
16 Power Switch o Used to turn on the machine by rotating the switch
clockwise
17 Emergency Stop o A fail-safe control switch that provides both safety
for the machinery and for the person using the
machinery
o Used to stop the machinery quickly when there is a
risk of injury or the workflow requires stopping
18 Digital Controller o Used to ensure that the specified test rate is
accurately maintained throughout the test
