License updating

Note: The information in this document is valid for Plaxis 8.1 with Update Pack 2 or
higher and PlaxFlow 1.1 or higher.
Note: The procedure described in this document works for local as well as network
hardlocks, but only in case the hardlock is connected to the computer where
the license update procedure is being performed

In case a license expires or should be extended this can be arranged remotely by

updating the license information stored in the hardlock. This process has 4 basic steps:

1) Generate a license information file; a so-called CTV file (Customer-To-

Vendor).
2) Send this file to Plaxis (sales@plaxis.nl) with additional explanation about the
required changes.
3) After the necessary administration the Plaxis Sales department will send back
an update license information file; a so-called VTC file (Vendor-To-
Customer).
4) This file can be read in Plaxis in order to update the hardlock.

Generate a license file

From the Help menu in Plaxis Input the option “License Update” should be chosen.
This will show the following window.

In case of an expired license a similar window will automatically show when the
program is started during the last two weeks before the license finally expires.

The license file is generated by pressing the <Generate> button. If Microsoft Outlook
has been installed Plaxis will attempt to open a new e-mail with the license file
attached. This e-mail should be send to the Plaxis Sales department. When Plaxis fails
to open a new e-mail the license file must be send manually; the file can be found in
the directory where Plaxis has been installed and has extension CTV.
Updating the license
After receiving the VTC file from the Plaxis Sales department by e-mail this file
should be copied to some location, preferably to the directory where Plaxis has been
installed.
After starting Plaxis Input please choose the menu option Help -> About again similar
to generating the license file. This time, however, the <Update> button must be
pressed. Plaxis will look in the directory where it has been installed for the VTC file.
If this file cannot be found it will ask the user to specify its location; see the
screenshot below.

Please note that the VTC file has a unique name and can only be used for one specific
hardlock. The name suggested by the file requester is the name of the VTC file
required for the hardlock currently connected to the computer. An error message will
appear when the incorrect license file was selected.
In case multiple hardlocks have to be updated they can be connected to the computer
one at the time and this procedure should be followed for every individual hardlock.

When Plaxis successfully updates the hardlock it will show a message indicating
success.
