Mujib Borsho

Mujib Year (Mujib Borsho) is the year declared to celebrate on the occasion of the centennial birth
anniversary of the founding leader of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to honor his legacy and
contributions to our nation. The Government of Bangladesh has declared the year 2020-21 as the Mujib
Year. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman or predominantly referred as Sheikh Mujib was a
Bangladeshi politician and statesman. He is often called the father of Bengal nation. He was also titled as
“Bangabandhu” by the people of Bangladesh. Bangabandhu was born on 17th March 1920 at Tungipara
in Gopalganj. His parents were Sheikh Lutfur Rahman and Sayera Khatun. He was a leading figure of
Awami League, founded in 1949 as an East Pakistan based political party in Pakistan. After the
independence of our country he served as the first president of Bangladesh and later as the prime
minister of Bangladesh from 17 April 1971 until his assassination on 15 August 1975. In August 1947
after the official birth of Pakistan, Bangladesh went under the ruling of Pakistan and was named East
Pakistan. But the other half of Pakistan didn’t justly rule the country. They favored West Pakistan over
East Pakistan and discriminated against the people of East Pakistan. Sheikh Mujib realized the
oppression against our people and began to fight back for the rights of our people. But the Pakistan
government tried their best to silence his efforts and arrested Mujib. But in spite of that Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman, won a landslide victory in the national elections in 1971 and demanded autonomy for East
Pakistan. But Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party refused to let Mujib
become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. On March 7, 1971 Bangabandhu urged the people to fight for
their rights and freedom. The war began after the Pakistani military junta based in West Pakistan
arrested and took Mujib to West Pakistan and launched Operation Searchlight against the people of East
Pakistan on the night of 25 March 1971. It pursued the systematic elimination of nationalist Bengali
civilians, students, intelligentsia, religious minorities and armed personnel. With the leadership of
Bangabandhu Bangladesh fought and won the war. After returning to Bangladesh Bangabandhu was
declared the president of Bangladesh. But on 15 August 1975, a group of junior army officers invaded
the presidential residence with tanks and killed Mujib alongside his whole family except his daughters
Sheikh Hasina, the current prime minister of Bangladesh, and Sheikh Rehana. Though he did not get to
live in the country that he fought for but his endowment will remain eternal forever and he will live in
our hearts for generations to come. After winning the third consecutive term Sheikh Hasina announced
to honor the 100 years of Bangabandhu’s birth by celebrating the year 2020-21 as the Mujib Year. On
November 25, 2019 at the 40th General Assembly in the presence of all members The United Nations
General Assembly, UNESCO, has decided to jointly celebrate the Mujib Year with Bangladesh. Sheikh
Hasina instructed programs for central and all divisional, district and upazila committees to observe
Mujib Year across the country. Two national committees—one for planning Mujib Year celebrations and
another for implementation—have already been formed in this regard. Awami League Acting General
Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said the Awami League and the government have separately taken
elaborate preparations to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman. He also said the Awami League high-up’s have already directed the party’s eight organizing
secretaries to give necessary instructions to district leaders to set countrywide programs on celebrating
Mujib Year. According to Hanif they will collect reminiscences about Bangabandhu from across the
country such as hand written letters from Bangabandhu to his colleagues during his imprisonment. Such
letters will be collected from those who preserved them. Besides, rare pictures of Bangabandhu will also
be collected. Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud stated that they have had taken huge
preparations to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu and they planned to release a
movie on Bangabandhu before his next birth anniversary. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already held
a series of meetings with party central leaders and advisory council members. She asked for their
cooperation and suggestions on celebrating Mujib Year elaborately. Prof. Abdul Khaleque, a member of
the AL advisory council, said different types of documentaries on Bangabandhu will be made and
displayed in different programs across the country throughout the year. Meanwhile, youth and sports
ministry has planned to stage various sports events, including a football match, two T-20 cricket matches
and athletics meet to celebrate Mujib Year. Besides, the foreign ministry has taken initiatives to present
the country’s motto ‘Friendship to all, malice to none’, enunciated by Bangabandhu, across the world. It
is also preparing to take an initiative to move a resolution on Bangabandhu at the United Nations on the
occasion of his 100th birth anniversary celebrations. The ministry will also organize seminars and
workshops on Bangabandhu at different universities around the world. As a gift for Mujib Borsho, the
Sheikh Hasina government has constructed 66,189 houses for the homeless. Each unit consists of two
rooms, a kitchen, a toilet and a veranda - costing 1.75 lakhs per unit. The government built free 2-
bedroom houses for 66,000+ families - and there's more to come. The people are living there rent free.
Besides the Ashrayan project, the PMO will rehabilitate 3,715 homeless families in 743 barracks in 44
villages across 36 upazilas of 21 districts during ‘Mujib Borsho’. There is a list of over 800,000 families
who will receive these housing benefits.
