They were often relegated to live in lesser areas of town and work at
undesirable jobs.
Though the Chinese worked alongside white workers, they were not
treated as equals. White workers were paid $35 a month as well as
supplies and meals. In contrast, the Chinese made $25 per month and
paid for their own food, supplies, cook, and headman.
