PRE-WRITING ASSIGNMENT
1. Thesis:
Looking back into the history of humans, I have learned a lot from the ancestors about
the way they lived and the way many of the ancient civilizations have grown. In this
essay, I want to discuss the Indus Valley civilization in order to understand more about
the history of this famous civilization. Each civilization developed their own community,
political system, as well as the structures but the way they did it was incredible since they
have to both adapt and advance their society.

2. Annotated bibliography:
● Pastoralism, climate change, and the transformation of the Indus Civilization in
Gujarat: Faunal analyses and biogenic isotopes
○ Citation: Chase, Brad, et al. Harappa,
www.harappa.com/content/pastoralism-climate-change-and-transformatio
n-indus-civilization-gujarat-faunal-analyses-and.
○ This source is focused on climate change during the Indus Civilization
since the climate plays an important role in the development of a society
due to multiple factors. This led us to the conclusion that Indus people
have distinct characteristics that helped them survive and also develop.
● Bricks and urbanism in the Indus Valley rise and decline
○ Citation: Khan, Aurangzeb, and Carsten Lemmen. Harappa,
www.harappa.com/content/bricks-and-urbanism-indus-valley-rise-and-dec
line.
○ This source is mainly discussing the main material that was widely used
by Indus people while they were building their construction. There are
benefits as well as the disadvantage of using this kind of material.
● Indus River Valley civilizations
○ Citation: “Indus River Valley Civilizations (Article).” Khan Academy,
Khan Academy,
www.khanacademy.org/humanities/world-history/world-history-beginning
s/ancient-india/a/the-indus-river-valley-civilizations.
○ This source is more like an overview of points that I should analyze while
writing the essay. Each point has its own description that could provide me
some ideas of how to cover all aspects of this period.
● Ancient Indus Civilization Slideshows
○ Citation: Harappa, www.harappa.com/slideshows.
○ This source provides me 23 slideshows with 1,000 slides by scholars of
the ancient Indus Civilization (3500-1700 BCE). I can easily explore the
sites, seals, jewelry, figurines and other artifacts from Indus times through
beautiful photographs and captions by the experts who unearth and study
them.
● Rare Ancient DNA Provides Window Into a 5,000-Year-Old South Asian
Civilization
○ Citation: Handwerk, Brian. “Rare Ancient DNA Provides Window Into a
5,000-Year-Old South Asian Civilization.” Smithsonian.com, Smithsonian
Institution, 5 Sept. 2019,

eals-complexities-little-known-civilization-180973053/.
○ This source provides result from an ancient DNA study, shown associated
with typical Indus Valley Civilization grave goods and illustrating the
typical North-South orientation of IVC burials.
