Lab # 5 Problem # 1: Objective

1) The document presents production data from an oil well over a 24 month period, with flow rates decreasing each month from 904 MMscf/day to 90.72 MMscf/day. 2) Using the decline curve equation qt = qi * exp(-D*t), the document calculates that it will take 37 months for the well's production to reach 25 MMscf/day, with a decline rate D of 0.0958/month. 3) A second problem analyzes additional production data to estimate that the cumulative gas production will be around 650 MMscf when the flow rate reaches 80 MMscf/day, and it will take an extra 5.53 years for the rate to decline to

By Using Equation:
qt = qi * exp (-D * t)
at qt = 90.72 MMscf/day and qi = 904.84 MMscf/day, and t = 24 months, find D.
904.84
D = ln ( ) / 24
90.72

𝑫 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟗𝟓𝟖/𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉
Now we will calculate the required time to reach 25 MMscf/day.
904.84
t = ln ( ) / 0.0958
25

t = 37.45 months

Discussion:
✓ By using trendline on semi-log graph, we have concluded that 37 months are required to
achieve 25 MMSCF/Day.
✓ Also, by using graph the time required to achieve 25 MMSCF/Day is also 37.45
months.

Problem # 2
Objective:
Estimate:
✓ The future cumulative gas production when the gas flow rate reaches 80 MMscf/day.
✓ Extra time required to reach 80 MMscf/day.

Gp (MMscf)
2017-PET-3 April 29, 2021

By using Equation:

qt = qi - D * Gp (t)
At the 8th point in the table, qt = 197 MMscf/day and qi = 340 MMscf/day, and Gp = 352,000
MMscf, find D.
340−197
D=
352,000

𝑫 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟒𝟏/𝒅𝒂𝒚
Now we will calculate the time to reach the last recorded flow rate, 184 MMscf.
340
t = ln ( 184 ) / 0.00041

𝒕 = 𝟏𝟓𝟏𝟏 𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔
Now we will calculate the total time to reach a gas flow rate of 80 MMscf/day:
340
t = ln ( ) / 0.00041
80

𝒕 = 𝟑𝟓𝟑𝟎 𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔
Extra time required for the flowrate to reach 80 MMscf/day:
t = 3530 – 1511 = 2019 days
𝒕 = 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗 𝒅𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝟓. 𝟓𝟑 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔

Discussion:
✓ The cumulative gas production at gas flow rate 80 MMscf/day is almost 650MMMscf as
shown by trendline.
✓ The Extra time required to reach 80 MMscf/day is almost 5.53 years.

Problem # 3
Objective:
1) Use the first six months of the production history data to determine the coefficient of the
decline-curve equation.
2) Predict flow rates and cumulative gas production of the year.
3) Assuming that the economic limit is 30MMscf/month, estimate the time to reach the
economic limit and the corresponding cumulative gas production.

Data:
Time Q Time Q

3 1104 10 843
4 1066 11 813
5 1023 12 782
6 986

Solution:

1. Use the first six months of the production history data to determine the coefficient
of the decline curve equation.

qt = qi * exp (-D * t)
At qt = 1023 MMscf/day and qi = 1240 MMscf/day, and t = 5 months, find D.
1240
D = ln ( 1023 ) / 5

𝑫 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟑𝟖/𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒉

2. Predict flow rates and cumulative gas production of the year. By using the following
equation, we can determine the calculated flowrate by simply changing the time;
Calculated qt = 1240 * exp (-0.03820 * t)
Time Q qt Gp

3. Assuming that the economic limit is 30 MMscf/month, estimate the time to reach the
economic limit and the corresponding cumulative gas production.

By using Equation:
D = 0.038 / month
Now we will calculate the time to reach the economic limit which is 30MMscf/month.

t = ln ( ) / 0.038

Discussion:
✓ By using trendline the total cumulative production at economic limit 30MMs/day is
almost 31.56 MMMscf.
✓ The estimated time to reach the economic limit (30MMscf/month) is almost 8.2 years.
