Blockage of the fuel oil automatic back wash strainer

Ship type: Crude oil tanker (254,000MT)
Main engine: Steam turbine
Filter type: Notch wire automatic back wash

1. Outline of breakdown

During cargo unloading work on the Japanese mainland, a steam pressure drop alarm occurred when
the boiler load reached close to maximum levels. Oil pressure was confirmed at 10kg/cm² (normal oil
pressure 20kg/cm²). The generator was immediately switched from T/G to D/G, and while lowering
the cargo pump load, inspection of each part was carried out. It was ascertained that the automatic
back wash strainer was blocked up. The strainer bypass valve was opened, and cargo unloading work
was continued under these conditions.

2. Causes

While voyage at low speed was continued, the blockage was not noticed by normal pressure differen-
tial checks. During unloading, as the boiler load reached close to maximum levels for the first time in
a long time, blockage of the strainer blockage was noticed. Although back wash was set to function at
a 2 hour interval to accommodate a reduction in fuel quality, as a blockage occurred, it was decided
that periodic major cleaning would be carried out henceforth.
