Lesson 2 Activity 2

Freud's theory of determinism proposes that all behavior has a cause and is predictable, with free will being an illusion governed by internal and external forces outside of our control. While pessimism can sometimes motivate better performance when waiting for uninfluenced outcomes, recognizing causality means accepting choice and the ability to change behaviors and break patterns through action and altered thought. Consciousness refers to one's unique awareness of thoughts, memories, feelings, sensations and environments. Social influence can intentionally or unintentionally change beliefs, attitudes or behavior through both peripheral and central processing, whether or not the target is aware of the attempted influence.

LESSON 2 ACIVITY 2

Instruction: Evaluate the theory of Sigmund Freud using the concept of humanity. Dimension
for the concept of humanity and rubrics can be found in the appendices.
1. The determinist approach proposes that all behavior has a cause and is thus predictable. Free
will is an illusion, and our behavior is governed by internal or external forces over which we
have no control. Power of choice may be only the power to bring the person to do that which
nature, society, and psychological forces incline a person toward.
2. This suggests that they harness their negative mood to motivate themselves to perform better.
Pessimism can also be more beneficial than optimism in situations where you are waiting for
news about an outcome and there is no opportunity to influence the outcome (such as waiting for
the results of a job interview).
3. To recognize and accept the idea of CAUSALITY means that you accept that you have choice
and, by taking thought and by taking action, by altering behaviors, you can change things for the
better. You can work to break or release the pattern.
4. Consciousness refers to your individual awareness of your unique thoughts, memories,
feelings, sensations, and environments. Essentially, your consciousness is your awareness of
yourself and the world around you. This awareness is subjective and unique to you.
5. Social influence involves intentional and unintentional efforts to change another person’s
beliefs, attitudes, or behavior. Unlike persuasion, which is typically intentional and requires
some degree of awareness on the part of the target, social influence may be inadvertent or
accidental. Social influence often operates via peripheral processing. Hence, the target may be
unaware of the influence attempt. Unlike compliance gaining, which is usually goal directed,
social influence is often non goal directed and the outcomes may be inconsistent with, or
unrelated to, a communicator’s goals.
