Future Educator's Teaching Insights

This reflection paper discusses the student's observations from a 16-hour teacher observation program. The student notes that elementary school is best taught using a teacher-centered approach, while middle school can incorporate both teacher-centered and student-centered methods. For high school, the student believes mainly student-centered teaching with some teacher-centered is most effective. Techniques observed included engaging students with questions, center activities, group discussions, and encouraging participation. The student feels they gained valuable insights into teaching styles and techniques applicable to their future classroom.

Each teacher has a unique style to teach their students. A teacher can teach a material

either student centered, or teacher centered teaching. As I completed the sixteen hours of

observation, I was able to acknowledge the difference between student and teacher centered

teaching and learn teaching techniques for my future classroom.

When teaching to Elementary Students the focus to teach a lesson is teacher centered

teaching. I believe this is a good method to teach elementary students such as first graders or any

other grade levels because elementary students enjoy being at school and are eager to learn at a

young age. The benefits of teacher centered teaching is that students can communicate with other

classmates, direct their own learning, develop their own skills in group work even though a

teacher is seen as an “expert” in a teacher centered teaching. Some techniques I will apply to my

future classroom would always have students engage in the lesson. As seen in the videos,

elementary teachers would ask students questions such as “What is happening” or “Could

anyone explain how we did this” to engage their thinking. Also, another technique I would like

to apply to my future classroom would be having center time. In center time, students would be

able to improve their skills or knowledge towards the subject meanwhile I observe their learning

or be helping students who need a bit more help than others without feeling discouraged.

Teaching in Middle School, a teacher teaches students in a teacher and student centered

teaching. I believe this a good method to teach because middle school students at this age are

learning more about themselves of what they can do or what they need to improve, but still need

help from others such as a teacher. The benefits of teaching student centered allows students to

think and work independently. Techniques I learned from the videos and would like to apply to

my future classroom would be allowing students to have group discussion over the material

being taught while still having control of my class. Another technique I would like to use would

be encouraging students to talk to their classmates, in group discussions or participate in school

related activities because I want my students to know it is okay to do new activities from their

comfort zone in my classroom.

To teach high school students a material I believe a teacher should teach their students

mainly in a student centered teaching and a little teacher centered teaching which also can be

seen in the videos. In high school, students want to have fun such as doing class experiments

rather than listening to a teacher talk about the material the entire class period. As a future

teacher, I want my students to engage their learning towards others. There will be days my

teaching will be teacher centered teaching due to new material being taught or review days for

students who need more help, but my goal is to have students learn the subject in a way they

understand it better rather than me saying “Okay this is how you solve this” or “This isn't how

you’re supposed to solve this problem.” Instead, I want my students to grade other classmates

because it encourages students to go step by step on how they solve the problem or how the other

student would solve the problem which is a new teaching technique I gained from the sixteen

hour observations videos.

Completing the sixteen hour videos, I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge of

being a teacher. I gain more acknowledgement over teaching techniques to use for my future

classroom, being able to know the difference between a student centered teaching and a teacher

centered teaching and much more.
